I guess the difference in opinion is whether DJs are doing a “job” when they are spinning that they have to “look busy” on the stage or whether they are there as guides that are themselves enjoying the music they spin. This goes back to the question whether people are getting together for a “party” where some people work and some people enjoy….

or a “gathering” where everyone is a participant in the gathering and takes as much responsibility as they can to make sure that the gathering goes smoothly and everybody ..”including the promoters” are able to enjoy as much as anyone else. The Dj is a participant to me and gets to enjoy as much as anyone else. He is not there on the decks to work and look busy doing something but to enjoy himself and try to make sure that he takes everyone in the gathering along with him on the same journey as himself.

The promoters are facilitators and not the bosses of the party telling people what they can and cannot do.  gatherings in Minneapolis have always followed the IDEAL of the “participant gathering” and not the party approach and hopefully will do the same in the future.

We aim to be different from the party mentality where partiers come and trash the place in the process of emjoying themselves thereby creating work for all the promoters who end up only working throughout the party and leave exhausted. thats where the policing mentality of the party promoters comes from as they are trying minimze the work for them at the end of the party. in a gathering there wouldnt be half the work to do compared to a party because the people have been responsible throughout to respect their space.

I guess it all depends on the vision of the promoters and I have always felt that the Chilluminati have been the pioneers in promoting psy culture in the Midwest. We in MSPaul will meet and hopefully exceed their standards in MSP going forward!!:) Cheers!!

Depends on the style of psy.. Most psy has the liquid flowing sound that when abruptly changed by a cut trick is really noticeable. This can take people of the “trance”. Some styles, like the noise poison sound (really glitched out) it really works well with. I personally thought Dai was over doing the cutting tricks though. One thing with that trick is that if your timing is a bit off it doesn't sound very good. Other than that I still thought Dai did a great job. The first track he played was his too, and was very good.

I was impressed with some of the stuff Chris was doing at Gemini.. Doing little cuts of the cued track to make fills and doing it to a rhythm. Subtle stuff, but I liked what he was doing.

Sometimes if the dj is doing too many tricks people stop dancing to just watch what the dj is doing.. I'm not sure that should be the goal of a good psy dj..

The whole purpose of  a psychedelic gathering to me is to get people into a state of trance and I have always felt that the “flow of music” is much more important than the tricks of the DJ.

I actually get annoyed when Djs try to impress people with their tricks as if the gathering is about them..to me it is about one's own journey into their minds and hearts and confronting their fears and embracing their strengthsand and sharing the energy with people around you and feeling their energy too. thats the reason why even tracks with clashing keys can mess up trippers and interrupt the flow of their thought process. good djs make the whole set feel like one long track with a theme or a story ..

psy tracks have a lot of effects built into them anyways..there is no need to add effects just to show that you are technically superior imho. to each their own though.

Big thanks to the Chilluminati for this event. Thanks to Trancepsyndicate for the dicovery of the venue and that sound! Oh the Sound! 100,000 watts of pure sonic nectar. Havnt heard an outdoor system with such range clarity. Gutwrenchingly loud but you could still have a chat with someone on the floor and hear every word! Thanks to the deco team…

I really want some one who plays so good..that they pretty much overshadow infected with their set. To do something like this..the set might have to be a little bit melodic and driving ..to cater to the masses..but any one who can pull this off will have my vote forever!! best of luck to nate for this one..!! some one help him with a nice tracklist and cue list if he gets selected..pls pls pls pls:) lol
