The speed or BPM of the music does not ensure that the music is either relaxing or uplifting..Case in point..“dubstep' is within the BPm you mentioned but can be very dark and evil..and I dont consider it either relaxing or uplifting..I am sure people who have heard dubstep will agree..

What is relaxing and uplifting is different to different people..and we should have an open mind is all I am saying..

Second stages aren't really limited to chill (atleast not the way we do it around here).  Many people play breaks, prog, trance, dub, minimal, etc on the second stage.  The main point of the second stage (imo) is to provide a place to relax (aka slower bpm music, ~130 being the max).

What is the definition of chill music? Thats what the question becomes then..I have not seen any consistent definition being followed anywhere..Does it have a bassline?..is it ambient? How fast can the bassline go if it is there..? Is there a definition that is currently stated in a respected Music Industry source that can be followed? A lot of the music being played would not meet some or all of the criteria..

Who gets to decide what is what?..Is there going to be an election for an authority figure now?

What it boils down to imho, is that people need to be more open minded and not get into ego clashes because of something as simple as music..we all came down there to have a good time..but it became something of an “attention grabbing” contest..the same things happened when the fire troupes divided the attention from the dancefloor before..and the attendence of the gatherings went down yet again..

All I can say that good dj should be able to figure it out by himself  😉

These issues have not been discussed openly as they should be..and just burying things into the ground by saying they dont need to be discussed publicly does not help the community..it just fragments the community even further which serves no one imho..

And from what I have heard from people is that other DJs played faster music on the same stage as me later on..I dont think that people dancing at the chill stage instead of the main stage is a problem even though I have heard some people wanting to “herd” people into dancing only at the main stage..

People should have the FREEDOM to do whatever they feel as self expression ARTISTICALLY at these Underground/Alternative Culture events..if these events also become structured and dictatorial like the mainstream then they just “lose” their meaning imho..

Chill stage is called chill for some reason right? It shouldn't be louder/harder than main stage imho.

Artists as “Professional Artists” need to make a living from playing out..if we dont have a budget that can support that..they can only come that often for free or cheap..this is exactly what a Top notch international Artist told me and I agree with him..

Money should not be the driving factor but in the real world people need to get paid for making a living..I admire the djs who do this for pretty much nothing but then there are “Serious” consequences to fragmenting the scene with these unnecessary clashes..going back to my other post..

Are we still what we set out to be? Or somewhere along the line, we just became an outdoor Mainstream CLUB..?

And just to set things straight..the volume was raised by the DJ “before” me when he was leaving, when he saw the tracklist..I just kept the volume at the same level that was set and even turned it down when requested in a “courteous” manner..I remember that morning like it was yesterday..:)

LOL..hey..All the tracks played were Uber relaxing and soothing..none of the brain crushing stuff that dominates the scene in the midwest nowadays..:) just because the bassline is fast does not mean it is mandatory to dance to the music..you can still sit and just enjoy the melodies..:)

The really ironic part is that the SEOA out door stage was more active in terms of performances and dancing than the indoor stage at many times..which I loved..:)

What exactly is chill differs from DJ to DJ..some of the new tracks in Opus Iridium album have a steady baseline but has been categorized in the chill part of the CD. Does chill music have a bassline of some sort or is it only ambient? The chill stage at SEOA was anything but ambient..I was at that stage for 80% of the night and danced/listened to some really nice music that definitely had a steady bassline but was really soothing/chill to me.. All the Djs including a fabulous set from Robyo had a bassline..

At the end of the day, what is chill to me is anything which is uplifting and relaxing..to each his own though..

So what if its not what some people want to hear? I don't see ANYONE at the stage the whole time.

Then we should have a breacore, noize, classical music, hiphop, top40 djs as well …. who cares….

For me personally chill area is an escape from the nonstop beats coming from the main soundsystem ….

I guess the point I am trying to make is that I see these gatherings as an outlet to an “Alternative culture” we are trying to create in our own small community. We have expectations of “leave no trace” and “all attendees are participants” instead of just being observers of a party they come to. We hold our attendees to a higher standard of humanity than would apply in any mainstream setting.

The important question is, “are we still on that track?” Has it just become about people trying to satisfy their egos by being the person like the club owner, just in a different setting?

Do we still have open minds to be able to see the other persons point of view?
Do we still believe that it is important to be inclusive and not create barriers for people who threaten our own selfish interests?

Any thoughts?

I have been a regular attendee of Chilluminati gatherings for a while now. What is the reason we come to outdoor psytrance gatherings?

Is it that we like to listen to psytrance on a big sound system? Is it the outdoor setting and the camping experience that appeals to us? Do we come to listen to the music played by the DJs organizing these gatherings? Do we come to get away from the stresses of our daily lives? Do we come to interact with the people who attend these gatherings? Do we seek some kind of fulfillment of our needs which is not possible in the regular club setting?

I think different people get different kinds of satisfaction by attending these gatherings. So much so that we are willing to drive long distances and spend extra money to attend them. We have lifestyles that are currently viewed negatively in the mainstream society.

If someone just wanted to listen to loud banging psytrance, all they would need a pair of headphones or even a loud sound system, both of which are pretty cheap in the US to obtain given the amount of money we spend to attend these gatherings.

I for one, come to these gatherings to get away from the mainstream culture promoted in clubs where we are expected to adhere to the set of rules set by the club owner. I used to come for the music mainly before but over time I have realized that the people are as much important or even more important than the music itself.

I do not like to be told that I am not dressed well enough to enter the club, or to pay exorbitant drink tabs and listen to the same mainstream “owner approved” music that is played with few exceptions here and there.

Sometimes the venue availability overrides all other matters..from my own experience. Not sure why they chose the weekend though..

Choosing dates is always hard..but sometimes there is no way to avoid conflicts..atleast its not the same city for both gatherings..

The good and the bad of the scene exploding..

There are still open dates. It's not at the point where conflicts are necessary yet. The week later is open…
