famiableMember“Are we still what we set out to be?” I don't think as a scene we ever set out to be something specific, and there is no end goal. We can only evolve, grow, and shrink based on those who are involved.
Something from the Chilluminati Website to refresh memories of what it started out as..What it has become is an open question..
The Chilluminati Manifesto
* THIS IS WHAT GUIDES US Psychedelic trance, chill and ambient are the music that we play. Music in itself is a transformative and psychedelic agent.
* Our parties are more than music. They are multidimensional, multifaceted trance, visual, art and kinetic performance events. They are experiences, a psychedelic circus.
* Our parties are about transformation and becoming. Whatever your sense of spirituality is, you bring that to the party.* At our parties everyone takes responsibility for the party, others and themselves.
* Our parties have an atmosphere and a vibe. The party is a field of energy that connects us. The party is a living being.
* Our parties are about expressing yourself, being creative, being an individual.
* Our parties are inclusive and open.
* Our parties are both local and planetary; cultural diverse, reflective of the American Midwest, yet global.
* We respect local laws and customs.
* Our party is a gift which we all (organizers, artists, DJs and attendees) give to each other. This is not about money, commercialization and exploitation. This is not a product this is a community.PS: Manifestos should be changed if the leadership doesn't believe in them anymore..

famiableMemberI just want to say one last thing because a lot has been said already..I learnt this long ago in my life…
“WHAT” YOU SAY IS NOT AS IMPORTANT “AS HOW YOU SAY IT”..
Even the simplest of things if said in an “inappropriate manner” never gets the desired result ..
after listening to the music being played all night and talking to Scott about playing goa.. I never expected to get treated in such
a hostile manner and that too from someone like tyler..the funny part is that earlier on in the evening I had congratulated him on doing
such a gr8 job on the deco..
We all came there to have a good time..I certainly didnt come there to ruin anyone's day..
I have been an avid supporter of Chilluminati gatherings since a long time and I hope we can move past this hiccup.
Peace
Anand

famiableMemberI'm not trying to argue I'm mainly trying to answer the question that was originally posted as i read it:
If someone (DJ/Promoter/Listener) believes non-psy genres are fitting for chill. How can you say they are wrong? I could play some johnny cash with some flanger on it and to me it would be chill psychedelia.
====Agreed
For someone only into darkpsy, how can you tell them that music like squarepusher is not relaxing and psychedelic after 200 BPM crazyness?
====Agreed
How can you tell some one “X Music” and “Y Music” wouldn't fit? Because it didn't have some one give it the “psy” tag yet?
====Agreed
How is telling you pounding Goa is not chill, if you believe it is?the original statement in this thread negates itself..
====All it does is ask who decides what is Chill and according to which defined criteria?
“Is there a definition that is currently stated in a respected Music Industry source that can be followed? A lot of the music being played would not meet some or all of the criteria. Who gets to decide what is what?..Is there going to be an election for an authority figure now?”
You state “A lot of the music being played would not meet some or all of the criteria..”.. but the sentence before you indicate there is no set criteria. And after that you question who decides that criteria. Do I have the meaning behind this statement incorrect?
Your original questions and forum topic “says what is chill music?” But you continue to go on about what you think is chill and whats is not as if you are the authority. Your statement should read “A lot of the music being played would not meet some or all of MY criteria.”
====I am not the Authority …I just put together some criteria that people were suggesting eg Ascension and pointed out that much of the music being played that night did not meet some of the criteria being offered to qualify the music as chill.
My point is that yes, you as an individual (and everyone else here) are an authority to choose what music genre is called chill or at least fitting for a chill stage.
I think the ultimate authority, however, for our scene is the community itself when they decide as individuals by voting with attendance, complaints and rave reviews. A dj has the choice of what to play, but if the crowd and promoters don't like that choice it should thus be taken out of the criteria for a chill stage. Personally as apart of the “authority” of our events will want to have music that I consider fitting to be played and will be liked by the crowd. And if we make the wrong choice our attendance will be effected. If we make the right choice more people will come back. The same goes for any promoter.
So in my last post i also stated some of what I personally deemed ok for chill. If we all do so we will come to a guideline to what works for most and what doesn't. It looks like people are starting to discuss just that. It will hep fine tune event experiences for the better.
“Are we still what we set out to be?” I don't think as a scene we ever set out to be something specific, and there is no end goal. We can only evolve, grow, and shrink based on those who are involved.
The conversation was intended to make the point that a lot of music being played during friday night was upbeat and uplifting..which is perfect but at the same time does not qualify as chill according to concept of a lot of people here..
The Bigger Issue still is..Keeping in mind that disagreements over what music is acceptable in what time slot can happen and happen often..How do you handle the situation? Do you come on stage and start a Menacing conversation publicly..and then start sending people one by one to threaten the person ? Or do you handle the disagreement privately in a mature manner keeping the minor nature of the dispute in mind?
Enough has been said in these posts for the people involved to think about what happened and whether it was handled appropriately..
I personally do not think the reaction was appropriate considering that I was playing goa/morning fullon at a psy gathering..
As Scott said..people will make up their own minds when they listen to the people they trust for getting their information.
Have a great day people..!!

Off-Topic..!! 😛 ;D None of these genres fall within the scope of the conversation here buddy..:) I think we are diverging from the topic here..
famiableMemberwhat you just said just reflects upon your values..it will all come back to you for sure at some point..
what you sow is what you reap..and so much for claiming to be a old school raver..maybe all the PLUR went away with age..?? ;D ;D
They also happen when someone says “Change what you are playing..this is the fucking chill stage” in a menacing manner 🙂 ;D 😀
Ego clash happens when dj responds that way: “If you want me to stop&leave you have to make me stop&leave…”
Sounds like maybe the person that was being said to needed to get a clue.

famiableMemberYou preaching about following RULES is very funny..you are the epitome of breaking all rules..please dont pretend like people are stupid 🙂 😀 😀 ;D
Actually, if you re booked to play the chill stage, it's a given that you don't play pounding goa. Theres a reason I turn it down every time it's offered. I don't play chill. I'll play anything else though…

famiableMemberIf the DJs at AUM were treated in the same way as I was for not playing according to the time slot..There might not have been many DJs playing there at all..
AUM was the epitome of DJs breaking the “flow” of music that's being held in such high regard here..which is even more disappointing to me..
because it shows that people who are complaining about me playing morning goa/fullon on the second/chill stage (which wasnt chill at all) know all this very well and should have had a much more mature and balanced perspective for being the professionals they claim to be..
Speaking from experience, breaking rules is very common in this community..which makes me wonder even more why this reaction was so
extreme..does not seem consistent at all..does it..?

famiableMemberAnand if people tell you something you should hide your ego you're keep talking about and, at least try to compromise/understand where others were coming from ….
Yes..I have an ego too..wont disagree with that at all..in this case it was more of self respect kicking in …of not being treated like a
criminal..for doing something that is very common..Hope you see my point of view..All this conversation is an effort to see what the other
perspective is..but till now people have not come forward with honesty imho..

famiableMemberQuote from Saeros
“you are one of the only ones that plays goa at appropriate times (Not 6 am on a chill stage)”
=========Goa @ 6am at any stage sounds great to me and a lot of people I know..Smiley
I admit I was a little bit selfish by playing what I liked but Scott knew much earlier in the night that I was playing Goa..I told him myself..
so It was very surprising to me that it became so big of an issue in a Chilluminati Psytrance/Goa gathering..
lol..if only I had a dollar for all the times a DJ played something not fitting a time slot..I would be very rich by now..
what you are pointing out is very common and is not a reason for the Unacceptable behavior..I think all of us know that in our hearts..
Trying to spin the issue serves only to weaken the community as people are not as ignorant to what goes on as one might think.
famiableMemberBuddy…you have taken small parts of different posts which have different contexts..
If you read the posts individually they might make more sense ;D 😀
famiableMemberIt's good to talk about the bigger issue, I just didn't want a bunch of people who are uninformed or misinformed about the situation to weigh in on it and make matters worse. This is why I suggested PMing before.
These issues have not been discussed openly as they should be..and just burying things into the ground by saying they dont need to be discussed publicly does not help the community..it just fragments the community even further which serves no one imho..
“The Bigger Issue”
What it boils down to imho, is that people need to be more open minded and not get into ego clashes because of something as simple as genres of the same music we like ..we all came down there to have a good time..but it became something of an “attention grabbing” contest..the same things happened when the fire troupes divided the attention from the dancefloor before..and the attendence of the gatherings went down yet again..
if we can not find things common between each other, the community will stay fragmented..we wont be able to afford Diverse
Artists as “Professional Artists” need to make a living from playing out..if we dont have a budget that can support that..they can only come that often for free or cheap..this is exactly what a Top notch international Artist told me and I agree with him..Money should not be the driving factor but in the real world people need to get paid for making a living..I admire the djs who do this for pretty much nothing but then there are “Serious” consequences to fragmenting the scene with these unnecessary clashes..going back to my other post..
Are we still what we set out to be? Or somewhere along the line, we just became an outdoor Mainstream CLUB..?
famiableMemberI have PMed you twice and left you 1 vmail..I dont want to keep these thoughts bottled up in my head..I am different than you in that aspect I Guess..
The problem acc to me was “the way I was told to change the music and turn the volume level down” even though I didnt turn it up in the first place..it was the DJ before me as I have already said before..
I am the last person who wants to shut the party down due to volume issues if thats what you are accusing me of..The volume levels were obviously not the major issue and were turned down very soon..to say anything else is to ignore what actually the issue was..
There were other people who saw what happened and have agreed that kind of inter personal behavior was unacceptable..This small variance is something that has “become a mountain from a molehill” because of attention, EGO and Control issues..Its just sad to see things degrade to this level considering the pioneering nature of the Chilluminati in the past.
I hope something positive comes out of all this..
The person who decides what chill music is, is the person throwing the event and booking the DJ's to play. One promoter may think breakcore, country, and polka fits, another promoter may not. If a dj plays something the promoter doesn't like they have right to stop the person or to not book them again.
A quick response to Anand, since its obvious you digging at something…
What you played was fine for the time if it was played at the main stage. Marv the venue owner spoked to us about why were having loud and fast dance music playing at the stage outside, as part of our agreement with him we would not do so. According to Igor and Tyler we attempted to ask you to play something different and you acted not so nicely about changing what you were playing. People liked it when you played it so in the end we didn't stop you and Marv didn't seem to mind. So when others played faster stuff we didn't stop them as well.
To me it seemed the attitude was the biggest problem with those who had talked to you. If you want to talk to me further about it call me.. I have been busy and honestly I didn't want to have the conversation.
That being said what you played and what some other's played were not in our vision of what chill stage music should be. What you did play in the end worked, but in the future we are going to attempt to better convey the understanding of our chill stage goal/vision.
“People should have the FREEDOM to do whatever they feel as self expression ARTISTICALLY at these Underground/Alternative Culture events..if these events also become structured and dictatorial like the mainstream then they just “lose” their meaning imho..”
Yes and no, DJ's are booked with an expectation of a style they play and a quality to uphold. They have the freedom to play what they want as long as it fits the goal of where they are playing. While we want to provide a place for dj's to be artistic we also want to create a musical flow and journey over a long period of time. If dj's played anything they wanted it ruins that flow.
—
So, we can talk about chill stage vision later on a different thread.
and I want to say if any of you are not booked for ED it is not because of the above. SEOA2's vision was to try and book almost all of the midwest psy/chill djs and give them the chance to play. ED will have a slightly different vision..

famiableMemberI think the fact that a large number of genres are played on the second stage is proof enough that the party orgs are open-minded. But we all need to keep in mind that it is the SECOND stage.
Does it being the SECOND stage mean that it should not as many or more people or sound than the FIRST stage? Its just a number to me..it is very possible that the 2ND stage has more people dancing than the 1ST stage..what do you do then..Do you then start Herding people over to the main stage just because it is SUPPOSED to be more important in someone's head..
“Freedom is everything”..people should be able to listen and dance to whatever they want..and not be pushed in either direction..and we are not even talking about a totally different genre here anyways..which is an another hint of how this discussion is based on minute differences..
Both the stages should have equal importance given to them which happened during a recent MOP gathering with Androcell.
