One thing with chill stages at venues like NCN or FourQuarters is there are lot of people camping near the chill stage that listen to the music. So while there maybe a few rocking out to some upbeat music there maybe 50 people trying to sleep as well.

Normally we wouldn't have a chill stage as loud as it was during SEOA2, but since it ended up covering most of the camping sites we kept it at the higher volume so people could listen at their tents.

I will say the chill stage at SEOA wasn't 100% under control to be chill only and we were generally pretty forgiving/open minded about what got played. The #1 concern is that the music needs to be psychedelic and should offer a less energetic alternative to the trance stage when it is on.

IE late night darkpsy at trance with prog or minimal techno at chill is perfectly fine. But in the morning when there is prog playing or morning it should quite a bit more chill. During the day if there is no trance i think that the range of music can be much wider. Having more uptempo non-psytrance music (Techno, Breaks, Dubstep, acid/tech/glitch house) is fine by me. But, again it needs to be psychedelic.

Now some people's definitions of psychedelia differ. Like I said before one promoter may think breakcore, country, and polka fit. One might not. In the end the community will decide what music gets played by deciding to go to one party versus another.  So it is up to the promoters to watch and listen to what people are saying and liking about the events to make them better fit what people like to keep people coming. Of course in my mind if it takes having dj's play that don't play psychedelic music just to get people there that is defeating the purpose of what we are doing.

Now I have great respect for those who are wanting to get people into psy by converting ravers, or hippies, or what have you by mixing a lot more edm genres together at one event. Our scene needs those people. I don't expect Chilluminati events go into that direction. Nate said something akin to his goal of him bringing new people in and us keeping the family together. It was a nice statement said better at the moment.

Now what we have seen with chill and psy dj's over the last couple of years here is a great diversification of styles and some amazing skill. I can only see midwest events getting better and better because we are getting away from focusing in on a few styles. It sounds like people are getting more curious about what is out there. Even myself. The more dj's we have that can introduce that fresh new sound the better off we are for longevities sake.

And by the amount of parties that have been happening there should be lots of room to experiment. All of the dj's and promoters have their own role in finding in what is in my hope is our own unique midwestern psy flavor and sound.

    Go Team!

I always thought the chill stage should be more listening music than dancing music. Or if it's danceable, I would hope it inspired something a bit more interpretive than trance dance stomping. Music you think about, not music that helps you stop thinking. Putting prog on the chill stage seems a bit off to me. It has its place on the dance floor, not where people are trying to talk over it. Glitchy breaks/minimal, IDM, Dubstep, ambient Live PA's, general wierdness, novelty show tunes, atmospheric DnB, trip hop, maybe even someone spinning spoken word would all be great.

Actually,  some chill with a super intelligent lecturer like Terrence McKennah would be AWESOME. I wonder if we could get Dennis McKennah to come down and give us a talk some time. That would be the perfect thing to listen to while your winding down in your tent…

Some prog can fit well on the chill stage.  I played a light style of prog at expedition that you could just relax to and didn't need to dance to it to enjoy it.

I'm not trying to argue I'm mainly trying to answer the question that was originally posted as i read it:

If someone (DJ/Promoter/Listener) believes non-psy genres are fitting for chill. How can you say they are wrong? I could play some johnny cash with some flanger on it and to me it would be chill psychedelia.

For someone only into darkpsy, how can you tell them that music like squarepusher is not relaxing and psychedelic after 200 BPM crazyness?

How can you tell some one “X Music” and “Y Music” wouldn't fit? Because it didn't have some one give it the “psy” tag yet?

How is telling you pounding Goa is not chill, if you believe it is?

the original statement in this thread negates itself..

“Is there a definition that is currently stated in a respected Music Industry source that can be followed? A lot of the music being played would not meet some or all of the criteria. Who gets to decide what is what?..Is there going to be an election for an authority figure now?”

You state “A lot of the music being played would not meet some or all of the criteria..”.. but the sentence before you indicate there is no set criteria. And after that you question who decides that criteria. Do I have the meaning behind this statement incorrect?

Your original questions and forum topic “says what is chill music?” But you continue to go on about what you think is chill and whats is not as if you are the authority. Your statement should read “A lot of the music being played would not meet some or all of MY criteria.”

My point is that yes, you as an individual (and everyone else here) are an authority to choose what music genre is called chill or at least fitting for a chill stage.

I think the ultimate authority, however, for our scene is the community itself when they decide as individuals by voting with attendance, complaints and rave reviews. A dj has the choice of what to play, but if the crowd and promoters don't like that choice it should thus be taken out of the criteria for a chill stage. Personally as apart of the “authority” of our events will want to have music that I consider fitting to be played and will be liked by the crowd. And if we make the wrong choice our attendance will be effected. If we make the right choice more people will come back. The same goes for any promoter.

So in my last post i also stated some of what I personally deemed ok for chill. If we all do so we will come to a guideline to what works for most and what doesn't. It looks like people are starting to discuss just that. It will hep fine tune event experiences for the better.

“Are we still what we set out to be?” I don't think as a scene we ever set out to be something specific, and there is no end goal. We can only evolve, grow, and shrink based on those who are involved.

wow :o, I have never seen Scott open up like that. Very nice, inteligent posts man, props and respect. And sorry to say that but Anand: your last post is totally immature…

^i agree with what machi said.

being someone who is relatively new to psychedelic trance culture, i definitely see little to no “outdoor club” attitude, especially not at my first chilluminati campout, SEOA 2. it was very refreshing & healing to attend what truly felt like a tribal, familial psychedelic gathering… especially after spending time in the chicago rave scene.

    a couple of comments:

dubstep is actually generally around 140bpm, but trance people think its slower because there is no monotonous kick on every beat 😉

it is not all dark scary evil stuff – check my set from gmsf and maybe it will help change your mind: http://www.djnod.net/?p=19

as for damon not being allowed to play goa @ AUM…it was totally ruining the mood me & his mom had going in the dome there 😉

“chill” is definitely a very vague, ambiguous term…it means different things to everybody who hears it, much like “trance” which means craptacular clubby ibiza-style epic trance to some folks, Atmos to others, Hallucinogen/GMS/Astral Projection to others, Xenomorph to some, etc…i recommend everybody go track down some old mixmaster morris albums (or some of his newer dj sets) to see what the grandmaster of chill has to play about it 🙂

====All it does is ask who decides what is Chill and according to which defined criteria?

====I am not the Authority …I just put together some criteria that people were suggesting eg Ascension and pointed out that much of the music being played that night did not meet some of the criteria being offered to qualify the music as chill.

My point is that yes, you as an individual (and everyone else here) are an authority to choose what music genre is called chill or at least fitting for a chill stage.

The conversation was intended to make the point that a lot of music being played during friday night was upbeat and uplifting..which is perfect but at the same time does not qualify as chill according to concept of a lot of people here..

The Bigger Issue still is..Keeping in mind that disagreements over what music is acceptable in what time slot can happen and happen often..How do you handle the situation? Do you come on stage and start a Menacing conversation publicly..and then start sending people one by one to threaten the person ? Or do you handle the disagreement privately in a mature manner keeping the minor nature of the dispute in mind?

Enough has been said in these posts for the people involved to think about what happened and whether it was handled appropriately..

I personally do not think the reaction was appropriate considering that I was playing goa/morning fullon at a psy gathering..

As Scott said..people will make up their own minds when they listen to the people they trust for getting their information.

    Have a great day people..!!

Anand: thanks for the props on my friday night SEOA set! I definitely appreciate your opinions on music and what is the “uplifting” vibe.

NOD: I downloaded all your posted sets and they kickass man! I would say that the dubstep stuff is usually on the dark side.

with all the talk surrounding this thread, i cannot say that i am surprised that this has been brought to public attention for criticism instead of Anand talking to me directly, since I am the one that this thread is directed towards.

145-ish full-on morning trance does NOT constitute chill, even if you're used to listening to 200bpm darkpsy… I asked you politely to shift back to the stage's focus at SEOA and you refused and were rude to me about it.  Should I say more?

I remember specifically you telling me that I would have to find another DJ to play because you weren't going to play chill at all (on the chill stage) and when I did, you told them the same thing that you told me: you're not giving up your spot.  You totally hijacked the stage, man— And from what others say about you, you do that quite often!  Scott's right in saying that people who camp around the chill stage have certain expectations of what music will be played.

Not to mention your selfish ego made me look like a total jackass to the venue staff, who also had certain expectations of that stage.

I am sorry Anand, but I find it very disheartening that you can post public threads attacking the issue without ever even talking to me, and I find it even more disheartening that you can apologize to others for how you treated the situation, but you cannot even apologize to me who had to deal with you.

I , for one, am pretty disheartened when I hear anything but chill music (which I agree with Tyler on for definations) on a chill stage. More and more I come for the downtempo / chill music rather than the trance. When I hear old school rave music at 10 AM on the chill stage I camped near to relax at it is a bit annoying. When I want to go relax around midnight at the chill stage and meditate or something and there is tiesto trance playing, annoying to me all so. It is fine to have that on another stage but please do not call it a chill stage.

off-topic: Jeff, it was really awesome seeing you spining hulla-hop like crazy during Damon vs. Varun chill out set in Iowa.

But you are missing the point that it was much less a problem of the musical choice of what you played, but a problem with the promise to the venue owner that we would not play that music at that stage. In this case as Tyler had just talked to the venue owner about this just prior to your set and you were thus breaking our promise to the venue owner. As a result Tyler requested you to slow it down or play chill. However not nice he said it, it doesn't change the fact of why he was asking.

So.. My question is in everyone's opinion, How soon during the day should dancier chill start up again? I think a majority of people sleep between 6 and 12-2pm or so. Most of the time at outdoor parties it is too hot to sleep much later than noon. So around 2 pm do you think it is ok to start with maybe slow prog, techno, breaks, etc to get people something to groove to if there is no trance stage? or is much later?

Toki and I played prog from 1-4pm at the chill stage in Iowa and people seemed to really dig it, even if they didn't dance much.
