SozeKeymasterMy lady is less tolerant than I am… ;D
There are plenty of styles of psy or chill to create a “sexy atmosphere” without having to go to deep house. The Chilluminati goal is to spread psychedelic trance music and culture, not house/club/rave culture. (I use these terms loosely and do realize certain crossover aspects.) As one of the music curators of Chilluminati I don't see most house and many other electronic forms of music fitting into our vision of a trance floor. That said there is housey psy: check out Lupus In Fabula, Suomi, or Psybooty records stuff.
The problem is getting enough variety of the psy out there played when relying on mostly locals. We don't want to tell a dj what to play, so getting a huge variety is sometimes difficult to achieve. Luckily we are seeing a very good evolution of the locals into the different styles. When we booked Squaremeat a few years ago very few people had any clue that their sound even existed. Even prog a few years ago would have not really been played at all. Now its a different story.
UncensoredUS, MOP, and others may have a different goal than ours and that is fine.. you have your own vision and we have ours.
Chill stages are little different when it comes to what can fit in with the goal of a chill stage, but that is a different thread..
famiableMemberAnd from what I have heard from people is that other DJs played faster music on the same stage as me later on..I dont think that people dancing at the chill stage instead of the main stage is a problem even though I have heard some people wanting to “herd” people into dancing only at the main stage..
Which was also inappropriate imho ….
People should have the FREEDOM to do whatever they feel as self expression ARTISTICALLY at these Underground/Alternative Culture events..if these events also become structured and dictatorial like the mainstream then they just “lose” their meaning imho..
Chill stage is called chill for some reason right? It shouldn't be louder/harder than main stage imho.
What is the definition of chill music? Thats what the question becomes then..I have not seen any consistent definition being followed anywhere..Does it have a bassline?..is it ambient? How fast can the bassline go if it is there..? Is there a definition that is currently stated in a respected Music Industry source that can be followed? A lot of the music being played would not meet some or all of the criteria..
Who gets to decide what is what?..Is there going to be an election for an authority figure now?
What it boils down to imho, is that people need to be more open minded and not get into ego clashes because of something as simple as genres of the same music we like ..we all came down there to have a good time..but it became something of an “attention grabbing” contest..the same things happened when the fire troupes divided the attention from the dancefloor before..and the attendence of the gatherings went down yet again..
if we can not find things common between each other, the community will stay fragmented..we wont be able to afford Diverse
Artists as “Professional Artists” need to make a living from playing out..if we dont have a budget that can support that..they can only come that often for free or cheap..this is exactly what a Top notch international Artist told me and I agree with him..Money should not be the driving factor but in the real world people need to get paid for making a living..I admire the djs who do this for pretty much nothing but then there are “Serious” consequences to fragmenting the scene with these unnecessary clashes..going back to my other post..
Are we still what we set out to be? Or somewhere along the line, we just became an outdoor Mainstream CLUB..?
And just to set things straight..the volume was raised by the DJ “before” me when he was leaving, when he saw the tracklist..I just kept the volume at the same level that was set and even turned it down when requested in a “courteous” manner..I remember that morning like it was yesterday..:)
AscensionKeymasterI think that's a good thing to keep in mind what Scott said. Making sure you convey the “message” (if you will) of the chilluminati at each event is of utmost importance. Obviously me being me I want to structure things (only to a point) so that it creates the best experience for everyone. Utilizing what we have (different styles of music and different djs) to create a musical journey is key (imo) in fulfilling a weekend/one night experience.
HARDKORNATEMemberThat said there is housey psy: check out Lupus In Fabula, Suomi, or Psybooty records stuff.
Exactly. Theres all sorts of shit thats not getting played. Make a list of what we're missing and I guarantee you someone will step up and dig up some good sets. People are spinning the most obvious stuff cuz its easy to find and thats what they hear at shows. We have too much dark, just enough morning, we're way short on melodies, and theres noone doing the 130 BPM stuff…
damonMemberIt was dealt with and doesn't need to be discussed publicly. Atleast not in this thread.
Dude we're discussing what music should/shouldn't be played@our events ….

I play prog at 130 bpm 🙂

Love ya man..but I think you know what I am talking about very well..:)
These issues have not been discussed openly as they should be..and just burying things into the ground by saying they dont need to be discussed publicly does not help the community..it just fragments the community even further which serves no one imho..
That being said..I do think we have diverted from the orig topic and would request the mod to create a new thread with the relevant posts.
PauldoMemberTalking about what happened in the past can help to avoid the same mistakes in the future 😛
Like that time I did your mom without a condom. My junk turned green for a whole week!
SozeKeymasterThe person who decides what chill music is, is the person throwing the event and booking the DJ's to play. One promoter may think breakcore, country, and polka fits, another promoter may not. If a dj plays something the promoter doesn't like they have right to stop the person or to not book them again.
A quick response to Anand, since its obvious you digging at something…
What you played was fine for the time if it was played at the main stage. Marv the venue owner spoked to us about why were having loud and fast dance music playing at the stage outside, as part of our agreement with him we would not do so. According to Igor and Tyler we attempted to ask you to play something different and you acted not so nicely about changing what you were playing. People liked it when you played it so in the end we didn't stop you and Marv didn't seem to mind. So when others played faster stuff we didn't stop them as well.
To me it seemed the attitude was the biggest problem with those who had talked to you. If you want to talk to me further about it call me.. I have been busy and honestly I didn't want to have the conversation.
That being said what you played and what some other's played were not in our vision of what chill stage music should be. What you did play in the end worked, but in the future we are going to attempt to better convey the understanding of our chill stage goal/vision.
“People should have the FREEDOM to do whatever they feel as self expression ARTISTICALLY at these Underground/Alternative Culture events..if these events also become structured and dictatorial like the mainstream then they just “lose” their meaning imho..”
Yes and no, DJ's are booked with an expectation of a style they play and a quality to uphold. They have the freedom to play what they want as long as it fits the goal of where they are playing. While we want to provide a place for dj's to be artistic we also want to create a musical flow and journey over a long period of time. If dj's played anything they wanted it ruins that flow.

So, we can talk about chill stage vision later on a different thread.
and I want to say if any of you are not booked for ED it is not because of the above. SEOA2's vision was to try and book almost all of the midwest psy/chill djs and give them the chance to play. ED will have a slightly different vision..

For the record, I would love to play at ED and I am willing to take an assignment to dig up some awesomeness of a style thats not being repped sufficiently. Just point me in the direction you want and I'll research it and come back with some winners 🙂
MachiGuestI don't want to get involved into too much tension going on in this very thread but….
1. There are many dj's playing good progressive/psygressive among us already: GeaL, Scatter, Underfoot, Toki, Ando, hmmm… myself if anyone hasn't noticed by now… and Kevin prooved last weekend he can deliver nice beats and melodies as well.
3. Like I said above progression is the key. The darkest music should be played between 1-4 not 10-6. You have to build up the tension. I would say there would be nothing wrong with the org slightly suggesting what they would expect from certain dj's to play at their party. The problem is too many of us have too big of an ego to take any suggestions….
4. The problem is the line up. There are plenty very talented dj's playing dark full-on that I have never have a chance to listen or jump to due to the fact they play 10 pm friday set – yes, Aktif – I think you the shit my man and I would love to stomp hard to your stuff if you ever played at more proper for you time (just an example, but obvious one). Also giving dj's a little more time posting line-ups sooner would give them enough time to communicate with each other and create better flow at the party. Its really crucial and those who attended Gemini will confirm the excellent flow of music for entire weekend. The man behind the scene who was changing up time slots of certain djs for the better progression/degression was no one else but Paradigm himself. The result was pleasing to say at least.
4. I wouldn't really go to crazy with the slow/cheessy/edm stuff. Although it was a nice change to hear some trance athems during Dr. Z set I think it sounded way too cheesy for our gatherings. There is plenty very good psychedelic progessive out there at 128 -138 very sutible for opening and closing the party on the main stage.
5. Leave the chill out stage for chill out music: what is chillout music you ask: something you can listen to and relax, when a dj's is playing excellent chill out set I fall asleep. I think the whole purpose of having chill out stage is to create the opposite effect to what is happening on the main stage but if you choose to bob and weave to it you still can… 5 cents from me this time.
p.s. sorry if I repeated in my own words what some of us wrote already but this only confirms that we are on the same page :).
AscensionKeymasterI like the idea of creating a counterpoint, hadn't thought of it that way before.
famiableMemberI have PMed you twice and left you 1 vmail..I dont want to keep these thoughts bottled up in my head..I am different than you in that aspect I Guess..
The problem acc to me was “the way I was told to change the music and turn the volume level down” even though I didnt turn it up in the first place..it was the DJ before me as I have already said before..
I am the last person who wants to shut the party down due to volume issues if thats what you are accusing me of..The volume levels were obviously not the major issue and were turned down very soon..to say anything else is to ignore what actually the issue was..
There were other people who saw what happened and have agreed that kind of inter personal behavior was unacceptable..This small variance is something that has “become a mountain from a molehill” because of attention, EGO and Control issues..Its just sad to see things degrade to this level considering the pioneering nature of the Chilluminati in the past.
I hope something positive comes out of all this..
