Let's face it, Tribe is not keeping up with Web2.0. Technically it's a very weak site, and way too many people are not on it or even aware of it.

Damn straight; it's fine for the west coast scene, but Tribe is going exactly nowhere. Facebook is smartly designed (even though the application craze is dumb). Paranoid about Facebook? I think it is a good rule-of-thumb to not share any information you wouldn't want your mother/boss/government to know about you–but that goes for every public area of the net.

Yes, this is geeky all right… my kind of language!

A few ad hoc points from my little book of wisdom:
– adapt your mixing technique to the style you are playing
– mix harmonically, especially when there are strong melodies
– chart a course from point A to point B; stagnation is boring
– the steady upward climb is by no means the only effective route
– try to incorporate a few old favourites whenever possible
– know when to let the music speak without interference
– show your enthusiasm; it's contagious
– get to know (and love) your music
– play for the crowd, not other DJs

CPU is the king of cheese remixes. “U Spin” is a remix of the tune in question, while “Undercover” is a good send up of “I like 2 move it” (remember that one?)… and if they handle it, Terminator does a funny job with 2 Unlimited. In fact, I wonder what mid-90s dance music “classics” haven't been given the psy remix treatment. Para Halu's done Pump Up The Volume (free on their site), GMS took on Rhythm Is A Dancer (and many more), and then there's the billions of shit Prodigy covers. Ugh. Forget I mentioned anything. Just play Texas Faggott's Back To Mad… (hilarious video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3ZRFaJefXo ). Yes, apparently I am a compendium of crap knowledge tonight.

Basically you can't go wrong with full-length previews and $1 WAVs from Cytopia. I heartily encourage all DJs to check out what they have to offer.

Playing psy at a wedding is something of a curse. People want music they recognize–what you have isn't it. A remix might sound like a good idea, but I don't know… anyhow, I went through with this not so long ago, so I do have a bit to report. Eat Static's funky stuff went over well, as did Bluetech and Hi-Fi Companions. I would also suggest looking up an obscure 1999 compilation entitled “Electro Lounge” and pay special attention to “Stay”… sort of a glitched remix, but it's been working wonders at weddings AND psy-chill tents (people always come up and ask what it is with wide-eyed wonder for some reason)…

Who's comin' up for some of that Canuckistanian hospitality? I'm really excited about this line-up… and I don't know how it rates, but this festival easily had the best sound system I've ever heard, anywhere. Powerful, incredibly loud, and incredibly clear. I remember arriving, being directed in the parking lot, stepping out, and hearing – clear as day – a track from Dino Psaras. My crew trudged over to the gate, figuring that it made sense to go scope out the setup before bringing all our gear in, and then we find out the festival grounds are about a 15 minute walk down the path. I was stunned! It's definatly a festival worth travelling for.

Anyways, yes, astronomy has been a past time for so many years, but as soon as the drugs caught on and whatnot, I put all my geekdom behind me.  That's over with, I've had my share, and now it's time to return to the new high of geekdom and looking “up” 🙂  Basilisk, I live in a very urban area.  In fact, roughly 10 miles south of Minneapolis.  The thing is, you have to spend a large amount of money on a case ;> with BIG WHEELS to haul a big telescope around, that's what I did.  I do however always recommend binoculars.  Perhaps you'd be interested in helping me out with doing something with heliospace.com, a joint psytrance nerd venture? :>  I've been sitting on it for ages as it was a name of a envisioned company from 97-99 that had 1000 documents written but no groundwork was ever footed 🙁 between myself and all the collaborates.

Ahh, I'd need wheels to cart a scope around, and I'm quite transit-bound (perils of urban living). I do however have a nice set of binox, which always come with me on festival trips. One lucky thing is that every festival in Canada is -North- to some degree or another. The damn shame is that the one time I neglect to bring my binox (unfamiliar territory) was last year's Eclipse, about two hours North of Ottawa, and those nights had the blackest skies I've ever seen. Next year, however…

As for schooling… I really have no idea where you got that from… or maybe it's just Ontario's education system that sucks. I was in an “enriched” programme and it was still lacking. Everything I know about astronomy (and most other fields of serious inquiry) is the result of an unyielding curiousity and the marvels of books and the internet. That's probably why I have a solid conceptual foundation and don't know so much of the math behind things 🙂

µTorrent is a really easy client to get setup and running if you develop an interest… download -> install -> open .torrent -> that's all!

I know it's a bit strange to be pushing BitTorrent as the exclusive means of distribution for all my content (see my web page for close to 4 gigs of other free stuff) but I'm keen on exploring alternate distribution methods, and I feel this technology is better suited for a non-profit/free culture sort of organization. Ultimately I just want to prove that anyone with a bit of creative know-how and hard work can become a content provider without the need to seek profit nor pay too much out of their own pocket to share their love 🙂
