I went to check out the S4 and a bunch of other gear at a local shop and couldn't actually find anything that looked interested. I am impressed with the build quality of the S4 but it is still too bulky, expensive, and preconfigured. Some other controllers were interesting but nothing seems to have the right balance of features that I am looking for. Actually, I realized that having a touch pad would be really excellent for controlling two variables of an effects unit in Traktor. That got me thinking: why are there no controllers with two pads? Some of the Ableton-specific controllers have one but the rest is all dumb hits that I would never use. So… the search goes on!

(And this reminds me, has anyone played with using an iPad as a controller?)

I skimmed over some of this. Has any of it been verified with experiment? Seems a bit fringe… and strangely familiar. Actually, I recall this being a major subject of presentations at some west coast festivals last summer. I missed all that… not that I am qualified to assess any of this stuff anyway.

This headline caught my eye. Unfortunately… well, you know where this is going, don't you 🙂

First of all, the article you link to is a retelling of this HuffPo story:

Let's break down the headline of the story you posted…

NASA report: Leifer is not affiliated with NASA. Sounds like he was a part of a NASA research mission which is not quite the same. The report? To be released. Kinda hard to read into it any more.
confirms toxic dispersants DID rain down on Gulf Coast: Totally false.

Leifer says:

Clearly, spraying dispersants near populated areas is a bad idea. If dispersants are aerosolized that is a bad thing as well. I do not have data on the dispersants so I will speak to what I do know.

So what does he know? Hydrocarbon volatiles i.e. oil. That's what he is talking about. Not dispersants.

Furthermore, hydrocarbon volatiles were detected in clouds, not rain:

I don't have documentation on the rain.

A technicality, however: I think it is reasonable to assume those volatiles rained out.

In essence this headline is just another example of how non-experts completely fuck up science reporting. Read critically.

Final note: although the headline is terribly inaccurate the BP oil spill obviously caused a tremendous amount of harm. I am on board with what Leifer is saying… I'm only critical of the game of telephone that is happening here.

yeah, which is not necessary a bad thing, it's not like you don't have a option to customize it the way you want it…until I work with the stuff for a while and really know what I need and I am a sort of “dummy”, aren't I ?

We're all dummies until we reject what the industry is spoon-feeding us 🙂

Then again, I've always been a poor DJ working with very little money so I have to rationalize my lack of shiny toys.

Sure, but it's also a “DJ controller for dummies” kind of approach. Everything pre-mapped and ready to go… easy, right? But the power of controllerism is designing your own custom interface.

The Nanokontrol is indeed a cheaply made plastic thing… I'm just impressed it works as well as it does. Still, I'd like to upgrade to something with a little more deck space and build quality. What I don't see a need for is giant jog wheels. It's funny because I delayed getting into laptop DJing as I couldn't find a nice interface that approximated the CD deck experience… it was only once I realized that I don't need it anymore that I took the leap.

Oh, and the best thing about laptop DJing? Instant access to every song I might ever want to play. Any genre, any time period. All in one place, sorted, filed, tagged, locked, and ready to go. It's been a lot of work (and it's not quite over) but it's such a nice feeling to have complete access to my entire collection at the touch of a button.

They're banking on the fact that DJs like heavy equipment to play with… in the last year I've been exploring cheap and compact (spent $70 on a Korg Nanokontrol and custom mapped it) and it works just as well.

I really don't see why you keep sniping me, Machi. First the out-of-the-blue comment in the bigfoot thread, now this. Are you holding a grudge about something?

For the record: I wasn't trolling. I was being conciliatory and just letting it slide instead of getting into the nitty-gritty of fact-checking and throwing links back and forth. Abe's into it and that's fine. Doesn't matter much to me either way.
