We could score some fake plastic foliage and paint it with UV reactive paint. That would probably look tight as hell and be reusable, too.

Someone did something like that at Interfuse (midwest regional burning man event), it was awesome!! they had a whole garden and put them in pots. I was a .bit. messed up and was convinced they were real when they weren't. The gardener played along with me and was like, “Oh yeah, those are real”. Next day I looked and found out the truth, damn burners messing with ravers.

I really liked the flowers set up by the chill stage at DF. More of those would be cool!

A certain Well Known DJ told Devorah it made the chill space too “girly”.  😀

I suggest we balance it out next time with some hubcaps and football memorabilia, maybe a neon beer sign or two.

If being girly is appreciating the lighter things in life than I am a bit girly 🙂  I thought it was like Alice In Wonderland.

Yeah, no doubt. I love me some chrome and brushed metal with rivets in at as much as the next guy, but the chill space should be as surreal as possible. I travel a LOT for work and I could start stopping in at the goodqwill in all the little towns I travel through. I bet I could come up with a whole bunch of neet stuff to give to you guys for “disposable decoration”

During the day: Costco barn/carports or big tarps on the long poles will give enough shade 🙂

During the night: portable firepit (whatever You call it) _ cheap ass seats will make Your experince more intense 🙂

Anyway, besides pillows and blankets: hay things (sorry for my vocabulary 🙂 )

Very pleased to have found this thread!
I'll definitely help work with Chillout space set-up and logistics… There have been a lot of great ideas so far. Personally, i think the simpler, the better: a pavillion, tiki torches (if no fire is possible), chairs, and flowers as well as a shrine would be ideal. I also like Jeff Z's preference for art/crafts supplies and maybe some random trip toys.
As a dj, it's really a pain in the ass to spin chill when you're trying to fight the dance sound system only a few yards away (as in Dreamfields). I really had to crank the bass to cover up the trance sounds. Ideally, the chill-space should be a good distance from the dance set-up, so it's easier to spin ambient and softer tracks….
Unfortunately, we're running out of time for outdoor chill (Karmaclysm will be the last?), but we should continue to push the chill-out rooms at indoor events this winter. Also, message and yoga sessions are a great idea to activate the chill spaces!
    peace, y'all

Devorah and I are very happy for all the good suggestions.

We will be putting MUCH greater efforts into the chill space at all future events. From now on it will be a cozy little cave protected from the doof universe. We will do whatever it takes, but with the hours we have available we need all the help we can get.

Especially bring your old blankets and pillows to throw on the chill space floor. (You can have them back when you leave)

I believe the long term solution to creating a chill space at our outdoor events is to construct a geodesic dome that would be assembled at open air events, with some kind of shade covering. It would create a safe space at least for participants — I envision the dj and sound system outside the geodesic but in front of it. You remember the dome that the Iowans brought. I also hear Zay has a dome at Interfuse.

If we are talking about the one @GeoLogic – IMHO it's too small 🙂 But chillout dome is a good idea. Plus fire pit outside .. great. Soundsystem should be inside though (everybody in the shade beside djs? – NO!!!!!!!).  ;D ;D

In the ideal setup the dj and soundsystem have their own conventional square shade shelter. In the front-right is a dome with webbing over it for daytime shade and nighttime snuggling. Close by, in front of soundsystem to left, is a firepit with places to sit. The three would be arranged in a triangle. Sometimes you want to be by fire, sometimes by dark dry cool place, when listening to music.
