RobyoParticipantI am interested in obtaining land to be used for farming, camping, retreats, and musical events. Are there others with similar interests? Or maybe this isn't the best place to discuss this stuff?
AscensionKeymasterMe. I could look at some stuff to gauge the scope of something like this (initial investment, property taxes). It'd be easier money-wise to have more people invested into it, but that leaves more room for other things to go wrong (people not paying, people wanting to do different things at different times). I think if the money was there and you created and stuck to an initial agreement (certain people have certain periods of time to decide how to use the land or something like that) it would have a chance of working. We'd have to figure out if paying for this would be worth it in the long run or if it would just be burning a hole in our wallets too imo. Maybe we could get a big enough piece of land and build an indoor structure to be used during cold months as well.
If I ever save up enough money, I really wanna buy an old farm house in the middle of nowhere with an empty barn :).
esmokahParticipantI have been to a place out in the middle of county land up by Cornicopia, WI at a 30 year long annual gathering called Baystock. It is close to a great drive along Lake Superior depending on where you're coming from. The stage they have is in this natural amphitheater in the forest and has drive up camping all over the place. It really takes in the natural beauty of Northern WI, quite a bit different from BRF too.
The sad part, is that the land around it is being logged off by the county. Soon it will be on the chopping block too. The people who organize Baystock want to buy it, i think they're looking for around $20k. It's sad such a good event and venue might go away with the trees. 🙁
I always thought it would be a perfect spot for a wild romp of a darkpsy party.. It's about 4.5 hours from Minneapolis.
After you check the link, zoom out and check out the lake and islands..
RobyoParticipantThanks for the info, Andy! It's amazing the deals that can be found… 20K for that space sounds like a real deal! Do you know how much land there is?
Also, the barn idea is great, Kevin. Audiognomes did a number of great events in a barn near Beloit, WI. Kalyx Center has a cool barn too, but too many noise complaints from neighbors… Still, it would be awesome to get something like that going again.
esmokahParticipanti was looking at the baystock website. they are trying to buy the piece i was talking about. they do have a website http://www.baystock.com with contact info if you want to get in contact with them. they have a bunch of pictures on the website too. it really is a slice of heaven!

Derek and I have been scheming on an idea like this too. The idea for us was to locate a piece of land that we could live on, care for and use as a venue space. It's a fabulous dream, but I've yet to figure out how to make the dream a reality and sustainable.

It looks pretty sweet. I hope they can save that land!
EklypzMemberYes, I have done vast amounts of research on this and advised friends who do something like this in Iowa. Have you ever looked the Intentional Communities site? http://www.ic.org/
I believe there are a few enclaves like this out west that burners have created and I -thought- a psy group had begun to work on some land. The name escapes me right now but it definately is possible.
Personally, I would be interested in it as a retreat center to focus on my artwork and small tribal gatherings.

Heh…want me to go “reconnect” with crazy David? 😉
RobyoParticipantprolly not a good idea… 😉
edaisGuestAt one point he was talking about selling that place. I don't know whether he ever did though.
RobyoParticipantWell, I never heard he was selling, but it would be awesome to buy that place.
Raven.NightsMemberI'd hate to have paul and alison have to deal with him again, plus those houses are getting closer and closer.
