What is the definition of chill music? Thats what the question becomes then..I have not seen any consistent definition being followed anywhere..Does it have a bassline?..is it ambient? How fast can the bassline go if it is there..? Is there a definition that is currently stated in a respected Music Industry source that can be followed? A lot of the music being played would not meet some or all of the criteria..

Who gets to decide what is what?..Is there going to be an election for an authority figure now?

What it boils down to imho, is that people need to be more open minded and not get into ego clashes because of something as simple as genres of the same music we like ..we all came down there to have a good time..but it became something of an “attention grabbing” contest..the same things happened when the fire troupes divided the attention from the dancefloor before..and the attendence of the gatherings went down yet again..

if we can not find things common between each other, the community will stay fragmented..we wont be able to afford Diverse
Artists as “Professional Artists” need to make a living from playing out..if we dont have a budget that can support that..they can only come that often for free or cheap..this is exactly what a Top notch international Artist told me and I agree with him..

Money should not be the driving factor but in the real world people need to get paid for making a living..I admire the djs who do this for pretty much nothing but then there are “Serious” consequences to fragmenting the scene with these unnecessary clashes..going back to my other post..

Are we still what we set out to be? Or somewhere along the line, we just became an outdoor Mainstream CLUB..?

And just to set things straight..the volume was raised by the DJ “before” me when he was leaving, when he saw the tracklist..I just kept the volume at the same level that was set and even turned it down when requested in a “courteous” manner..I remember that morning like it was yesterday..Smiley

Second stages aren't really limited to chill (atleast not the way we do it around here).  Many people play breaks, prog, trance, dub, minimal, etc on the second stage.  The main point of the second stage (imo) is to provide a place to relax (aka slower bpm music, ~130 being the max).

The speed or BPM of the music does not ensure that the music is either relaxing or uplifting..Case in point..“dubstep' is within the BPm you mentioned but can be very dark and evil..and I dont consider it either relaxing or uplifting..I am sure people who have heard dubstep will agree..

What is relaxing and uplifting is different to different people..and we should have an open mind is all I am saying..

I think the fact that a large number of genres are played on the second stage is proof enough that the party orgs are open-minded.  But we all need to keep in mind that it is the SECOND stage.

The second stage should fill in al the gaps and provide a counterpoint to the main. Idealy, it would be the opposite…

    IMHO, of course…

Does it being the SECOND stage mean that it should not as many or more people or sound than the FIRST stage? Its just a number to me..it is very possible that the 2ND stage has more people dancing than the 1ST stage..what do you do then..Do you then start Herding people over to the main stage just because it is SUPPOSED to be more important in someone's head..

“Freedom is everything”..people should be able to listen and dance to whatever they want..and not be pushed in either direction..and we are not even talking about a totally different genre here anyways..which is an another hint of how this discussion is based on minute differences..

Both the stages should have equal importance given to them which happened during a recent MOP gathering with Androcell.

Not completely true. We have found that the chill stage has become more on equal par as far as people attending the stage and the memories and experiences that come from it. We are wanting to try create a better balance between the two.

IE not everyone likes what is being played at the trance stage at all times so it is important that we have something on par with the trance stage for them to experience/

Some people also prefer chill over trance either, so it is also important to keep a good flow for them as well.

I guess I stated that wrongly about a different situation.  I meant that since it's the second stage, it should be different than what's being played on the mainstage at that time.  As stated, creating a counterpoint to what is on the mainstage is a good idea.  I don't think the second stage is of any less importance, but parties in the midwest seem to revolve around the djs brought in to play on the main stage.  I guess I mean that the priority of what music is being played goes to the main stage and the dj on the second stage should adapt to that, as well as their timeslot (just my opinion).

Which hurts me and few other people hehehehhe.

Chill stage line ups@Gemini's (especially!) and Gaian Mind's are the perfect (well almost) example others should follow  8)

they solved that problem at those big parties in europe by creating third stage and called it alternative where you play prog, breakz and cheese. And then you have main stage: night time full-on to dark to twilight to full-on morning trance and chill out stage where you simply spend time realaxing, socializing and meditating.

Exactly.  For instance, you are a great chill dj, but whenever I come over to see you play there is almost no one there.  At Gemini you atleast had a decent number of people (not sure about gm since braincell was on then :)).

I'm used to playing in front of no one so it doesn't bother me anymore  ;D

Gemini was excellent exception from the rule – so many people just hanging out in chill dome  😮 8) ;D

@Gaian Mind I played in front of 2 ladies in their 50s, Vince (Aes Dana), Magnus (Solar Fields), Dean (Onnomon) and all those who were sleeping in their tents around chill area so it wasn't THAT bad  hehehehe.

We all know how many people here in midwest come to our camp outs/how big is the budget for those parties/how many “bigger” chill artists orgs can afford …

I just wish the situation was different here  😉

In my experience with you Damon (and this should be taken as a compliment  ;D)  you are the greatest to listen to when at the end of the night you have trouble staying in “Reality” and just want to relax…  You really are a master at your chill crafting, and you are one of the only ones that plays goa at appropriate times (Not 6 am on a chill stage) and does it to the point where I realize why I started listening to this shit in the first place.

Which is why I'm pissed that you are moving  😉

I'm not sure if you're talking about yourself or me hehehehehhehe

I really wanted to play goa more often@our parties but didn't push it hard enough cause I was aware that there are enough psytrance djs out there that can cover timetable completely ….

Which is why I'm pissed that you are moving  😉

I hope some other people (hi Scott  😉 ) will continue exposing all those nu psykids to the roots  8)
