i've been into goa/psy for as long as i have liked electronic music in general… started djing goa/psy in 2000.  While working with the “rave” scene locally, i tried to incorporate psy here and there.  Didn't even know that there was a “scene” around here (midwest) until Amanda and I went to SF1.  I still thank Jef for going out on a limb for us to make sure that we could come (we didn't really even find out about it until it was sold out).  Since then, i shifted my focus away from the rave scene gradually, with my last event as “Illogical Productions” at the end of 2005.

My first experience with Psytrance was listening to Astral Projection – Dancing Galaxy sometime in the fall of 2000. At the time my only EDM experience was with big names from big genres… like Oakenfold, Sasha/Digweed, and Dieselboy. I was also just getting into the Dune universe at the time so the “Spice” samples blew me away. (they still do btw, lol)

Listening to Astral Projection, Juno Reactor, and Underworld (they may not technically count as “psy”) for the next 5 years was about the extent of my psychedelic music involvement. I went through this hip-hop and rap phase where I rejected all music that wasn't related to drinking, partying, and having money for several years.

After I got to Chicago in 2005 I started looking around for raves to go to (I had been somewhat involved in Cleveland and STL rave scene but I was broke most of the time)  and what I found was extremely disappointing. The music was just god awful. My wife, Carli found the Chilluminati website and it was through that we found out about Onomatopoeia Wed at the F212 lounge; there we met Troy and Julee from Psymbolic. They were instrumental in getting us involved… we continued to go once it move to Dulcenea. Although our schedules didn't allow us to go to any of the outdoor summer events in 2006 we did get to Tales of the Sacred Burning Heart @ the tranceamoeba, which was awesome. The first outdoor all psy event we were able to make it to was Crystal Sky.

As for being actively involved… The production crew that we work with, which consists of very close raver / Burning Man friends that we met while going to Chicago / Wisconsin parties before moving here, got the opportunity to decorate for a Burning Man fundraiser event, Resonate 2.0, last March. We ran into Troy and Julee there who suggested that we do some work with their events. Secret Fire 3 was coming up, so I sent an email volunteering our services… we've been as active as we can be since that time. I also decided to start actively spinning Psy right around that time having finally saved enough money to buy CDJs… the whole vinyl thing wasn't working out as I tried ordering psy records from overseas and half of them would show up warped and extremely difficult to work with. Not to mention the fact that the vinyl psy selection paled in comparison to digital.

Being an old freak with an open mind musically and being into trancing, trancing to drums, acid jazz, and some UK bands into trancey rock, it wasn't that much of a stretch. But I became aware of it, basically, when looking for something pagan to do outdoors and outside of my usual crowd and came across posts about Secret Fire. I knew they knew how to organize an event and I was curious anyway. So Karen and I put local politics aside and went. This was a few years ago. Surprised to run into a couple friends there, Karen wore her newly sewn costumes and danced all night, I spaced at the psy stage mostly, watching the fire and the spider people hanging on their web. There was a pic of me spacing in the morning leaning on a tree that appeared on some website.
Soon after we found Infected Mushroom, saw them, and subsequently have gone to every chilluminati event we could manage and searching out the music online and wherever. Still dont understand all the names for the various styles but we have fun.
And it's one scene where I can go to a club and not be immediately ostracized as an old man looking for young sex, felt accepted to that extent at least right away, age is irrelevant at most of these things. The community aspect of the scene is a big part of the events for us. As to liking the music, it comes naturally.
