oh sorry Machi.. I don't have the S4 I just tested one at at guitar center… I use my maschine or my friends x1 or my nanokontrol when I “dj” with traktor. From what I gather they are super sturdy controllers….

have you hooked traktor up to your cdj's using the timecode stuff? I thought it would be fairly self explanatory but never had decks.. finally a random kid brought some cdj 400's over and I couldn't figure it out.. I finally got ONE to work in midi mode but I thought the timecode stuff was totally different?

I went to check out the S4 and a bunch of other gear at a local shop and couldn't actually find anything that looked interested. I am impressed with the build quality of the S4 but it is still too bulky, expensive, and preconfigured. Some other controllers were interesting but nothing seems to have the right balance of features that I am looking for. Actually, I realized that having a touch pad would be really excellent for controlling two variables of an effects unit in Traktor. That got me thinking: why are there no controllers with two pads? Some of the Ableton-specific controllers have one but the rest is all dumb hits that I would never use. So… the search goes on!

(And this reminds me, has anyone played with using an iPad as a controller?)

@Xeno: I tell you man, first day I got my S4 I wanted to send it back right away…I had audio problems (all you have to do is unplug the battery – common issue with laptops), didn't like the gains, etc., after two weeks I am in love with this thing…takes time to get used to it like everything else so messing around with it for a couple of minutes in the store won't do the justice. I am glad I had never gone to the store to check it out cuz I don't think I would have bought it. And comparing to another quality controllers like Zone 4D or Pioneer DDJ-T1 it's not bulky at all, smaller and half the weight so ….stop hating  🙂

@psycherexic: I had to sell my setup to pay for S4 but I still have djm200 that I bought sometime ago for a backup. I just hooked it up to the live input on one of the channels. thats all. timecode won't be available for a few more days until traktor 2 is released.

Not hating, it just doesn't work for me 🙂 compared to my Korg Nanokontrol that thing is a behemoth! I need something I can slap in my backpack while I go hike a mountain or something.

I use my iPhone at times.  It's fun walking in the crowd controlling effects and such.

The downside is you look like you aren't paying any attention to the crowd and texting someone.

I Imagine with an iPad it'd be a bit better, what with the larger screen area and everything.

edit: looked closer and it does almost everything…

Can you change the loop modification knobs to be beat jump knobs? I rarely use loops, instead choosing to manually loop stuff by using beat jump…

I'm positive you can remap anything you want.. however, it might delete all mappings? that would suck.. so its hopefully/probably not the case.

My Nanokontrol broke last weekend at a gig (serves me right for leaving the cable in so many times after a show) so I went out and picked up a Novation Nocturn. It's very similar with a better build quality, endless knobs, and a dedicated crossfader… still not exactly what I need–but I don't think what I need has hit the market yet so I'll make do. At least it is still 100% custom mapping. My approach: map your mind to the hardware interface. IMO it's way better when you're on stage to have a powerful set of controls that you know very well and can use to their full potential.

Cost-wise, when I made the switch over I went with the Hercules RMX unit. Sure I would have liked one with more twisty knobs to play around with, but I figure that I can just add a second or third controller and map anything else I would ever want on those, and still spend less money <-always a factor :D.

To me if it's just for mixing, all you really need are the basics. I also agree that cd's are no less digital than a laptop, and actually with access to more lossless without changing media the laptop might be the better overall solution.

Sure I'd love to just mix vinyl all day, but I hate even moving my crates from one side of the room to the other anymore, and especially with psy tunes the added clarity of digital + the laptop and controller weighing in at way less than a crate = win in my book.

Plus if you don't have a crate of records sitting in your back seat you have room for one more dancer to bring along!

i don't really see the need to re-map anything on S4…everything is where it's supposed to be..my mind was already wired to that technology
