esmokahParticipant^^ i agree. Life wouldn't exist as we know it without our moon. Even if it gets knocked away from the Earth it would have dire consequences.
PauldoMemberI'm not at all worried about the impact of this well thought out scientific experiment. Sometimes smashing things into each other makes for great science. The impact on the moons orbit will be infinitesimal. The impact is no where near the mega-ton scale. NASA completed a somewhat similar experiment in the recent past where they crashed a refrigerator size object into a passing comet. A second orbiter then caught debris particles from the crash. The particles and resulting data have given great scientific insight into the composition and structure of comets, how our solar system was formed and possible hints as to how life on Earth began.
It's not even a scientific reality yet for us to have the possibility to effect the orbits of other heavenly bodies. Don't buy into Hollywood too much.
This current moon mission will hopefully give us good info on the presence of water on the moon. That is necessary for future missions to the moon, colonization of the moon and our eventual reach out into space. Our species continued survival is dependent on getting off this rock someday. Our future is in space.
Someday we will loose the moon from our orbit. It moves away from the earth at about an inch a year (or was it that it moves closer to us each year). Eh, doesn't matter, we've got to find new real estate anyway.

justinGuestI suspect the people at NASA are the gatekeepers of reality. They are ancient Egypt. For this reason I trust in what they are doing. I think their 'official' agenda is and always has been complete bullshit but if you pay attention it's easy to figure out what they are really up to. Like everything, it's all metaphor, and it all comes back to ancient Egypt. If the Illuminati exists, they run NASA.

hehe, I'd like to, except that movie is so gawdawful bad! The soundtrack is enough to make you want to rip your ears off.
sotMemberpoint is, we as peoples need to keep our delusion of safe continuation of our way of life, despite the reality of complete chaos that is existence. slinging nukes at the moon is our way of telling cosmos “bring it on chaos, we explode you!”

I suppose that's true, Igor. 😉 but there IS a difference between lobbing nukes at a planetoid on a collision path with Earth that could potentially snuff out civilization, and just randomly blowing bits out of our own precious orbiting celestial body. For the record, I'm not a big fan of testing nukes anywhere, but an asteroid seems a better choice than the moon or on Earth.

“NASA will tomorrow launch a spectacular mission to bomb the Moon. Their LCROSS mission will blast off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, carrying a missile that will blast a hole in the lunar surface at twice the speed of a bullet.
The missile, a Centaur rocket, will be steered by a shepherding spacecraft that will guide it towards its target – a crater close to the Moon's south pole.
Scientists expect the blast to be so powerful that a huge plume of debris will be ejected.
The attack on the Moon is not a declaration of war or act of wanton vandalism. Space scientists want to see if any water ice or vapour is revealed in the cloud of debris.
Though the Moon mostly a dry airless desert, they believe ice could be trapped in crater shadows near the south pole which never receive any sunlight. If so it could provide vital supplies for a manned moonbase.
Last year, British scientists identified regions where water might be found on the Moon and estimated that there could be enough to fill one of Europe's largest reservoirs.
The spacecraft will not head straight for the Moon. First it will orbit the Earth a number of times while its precise target is identified. Finally, it will send the missile into the Moon at twice the speed of a bullet on October 8.
The shepherding spacecraft will follow close behind, taking pictures and analysing the ejected debris as it looks for evidence of water. It has just four minutes to do this before it crashes into the Moon itself, producing a spectacular explosion that should be visible in amateur astronomers' telescopes.
It is a busy time for Moon crashes. Last week Japan's Kaguya probe collided with the Moon at the end of its own mission.
The LCROSS mission – it stands for Lunar CRater Observation and Sensing Satellite – will launch on an Atlas V rocket together with another spacecraft, called the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter.
The orbiter will circle the Moon for at least a year searching for potential landing sites for astronauts when they return there in the next decade. It will also look for suitable materials that might support a colony.
The dual mission was due to blast off today but was delayed to make way for the shuttle Endeavour. However, another hydrogen leak means that the shuttle launch has now been delayed until next month.”
