Nameless OneParticipantIt's a pitiful challenge, really. Estimates of stellar mass are regularly revised–particularly for record-setters. How many times have we found “the most massive star ever discovered” only to find that it is actually a binary shrouded in some dust or something? Likewise, the estimate for this particular object is by proxy: astronomers estimated the mass of other stars in the cluster and assumed approximately the same mass for the precursor to this particular object. Seems dubious to me… but of course it makes for a good headline.

holy shit this article is absolutely fascinating! I know quite a bit about astronomy, but even with that the University of Iowa never once mentioned a “magnetar” during my undergrad years! I have heard of pulsars and quasars, but never a magnetar, so this article was definitely a great break from studying for me. and the pictures, well, some of them are even as psychedelic as Psytrance!
I especially dig that the article simply discusses the fact that this potential discovery is leading some scientists to look more into our current understanding of black holes, and leading some to possibly challenge that understanding. If our current understanding is true, then the current theory will most certainly stand up to the challenges. Good theories only seem to get stronger when they are challenged, so I am surprised that some people who posted here had nothing positive to say about this article, in fact, quite the opposite.
