septaGuesthttp://www.lakesoffire.org/ (appears to be down at the moment)
is anybody going to this? if someone who's gone before can describe what it's like, that would be appreciated. i understand they don't really provide any music and it's all up to diy soundstages to provide their own setup/djs. so i'm wondering what the turnout is like for these soundstages.
cosmicvibrationsMemberYES! One of my favorite events ever!
Tickets are done for this year… hopefully you got yours, otherwise, you should post around.
What it's like… Burning Man in the forests of Michigan! Yep, DIY sound stages. Turn out varies, but one of the domes last year was usually well-populated. Music varies plenty. BM events are NOT music events, they're experiments in community and creative expression as a whole (and, I'd say, chaos!). But if you go looking for music, you will find music!
At Sacred Earth this year I was contemplating the differences between our events here and BM events. Psy events are very focused on music, each stage with a set intent and in between it's pretty much forest/camping. At a Burning Man event, you are in a temporary city in the woods! There are random sound domes, performances, art installations, bars, things that happen without a schedule… it's a very different experience, and I go into Burning Man events with a different attitude. One of my very favorite parts of a burn is the PEOPLE. If I tried not to interact with people at a burn and I was JUST going for music, my experience would be much different.
Part of it is that I literally have no idea what I'm going to be doing at a BM event. All that's obvious is that I won't be bored (and if I have some sort of commitment). You're given an open-ended playground of potential, and you pretty much create your burn from scratch.
Last year at LOF, I realized how I can make burns work well for me. Before I got there, I said, okay… where ever the group flow takes me, that is where I will go. A bit of fuck-it/whatever-happens-is-cool does wonders – I had an amazing time. Coming back to the default world after four days at Lakes of Fire was quite surreal.
Here's a video of the dome I mentioned, actually. 🙂 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOz1CcnFm1s&feature=related
