Analyzing the phrase “Boom Shankar Bholenath” led me to realize that the whole Goa phenom is a Shiva Cult.
Think about it… our Indian Goans have adopted the Shaivite chillum ritual.
Shiv Nataraja is a dancing god, a god of destruction. Goa music has the darkness, again like Shiva.
Shiva is the Blue Necked God, from consuming the poison that resulted in the transformative drink Soma, and some scholars feel that Soma was a psychedelic concoction created from Amanita Muscaria mushrooms (hence the blue neck).
Oh, and Shiva is a deeply androgynous god with both female and male aspects, and many psytrance fans have both kinds of genitalia.

Well I'll be damned…
I like that small lamp gif next to thread subject 🙂
Goan's are definitely not Shaivites. (A majority are Catholic because of the Portugese influence) Neither are they fans of the whole Goa trance movement, thats why theyve had major problems with the sound of all day parties since 2000. If the hippies and freaks adopted Shiva shakti it would have had to happen in Manali or Hampi (where most 'babas' are). I think it had a lot to do with Goa Gil's association with the Kumba Mela and Shiva worship. Most Goa hippies follow his path blindly and thats probably what spread it so wide. I think they shout Boom Shankar 10 times more in Israel than they do at any Indian Psy party. It goes hand in hand with the Chillum smoking.
But apart from that Shiv has little to do with psy trance. I've met a lot of Indians whove drawn that parallel too but I think thats approached from completely opposite directions.
I'm a yogi and that's about it. As far as I know, you can only be born a Hindu and cannot convert. However, I appreciate the history and culture of India and it's spiritual teachings are unparallelled. The Rig Veda is a far older scripture than even the Torah.
…and it's cool that the psytrance scene is secular. I hope it remains such and doesn't cater to one exclusive belief… That would suck if people were prejudiced against because they believe one thing or another. People should still be able to voice their personal beliefs without getting chastised. But then, I'm an idealist.
If Underfoot wants to shout “hallelujah” on the dancefloor, I'll be right with ya, brother!
I'm not saying it's Shaivite in any explicit way, but that Shiv's energy is shot through the whole thing. More on an occult level than anything cultural/memetic/dogmatic.
I bet you're also going to deny that Goans are hermaphrodites. Typical.
You are hereby ordered  to stop saying BOOM.

can we say BOOB, instead?
Whats sad is that “religion” has ruined what the basis of religion was. If the soma existed, its composition and use was lost because people converted the cult into a religion. I think a lot of young people have discovered the essece of religion through psytrance and hallucinogens. Thats probably why I can feel that belonging. Even being born into hinduism, I never felt its meaning till I got influenced by music, meditation and substances. Hinduism is very colorful and as a hardcore science student I couldnt take it seriously till I saw and felt those colors/chakras myself.
By the way 'Shankar' and 'Bholenath' are both references the Shiva. Boom is a tribute to him. The sound comes from your belly and is said right before smoking the Chillum. I think the syllables have a physical connection to exhaling 'boom' and then inhaling the chillium The sound is also meant to let the other babas in the forest know that a chillum has been lit so that they can come and join.
