Why would anyone drive two days to the godforsaken desert in northern Nevada, not a living thing, no water, and nothing but death all around? A place where you can't shower, you can barely sleep day or night, and where the tickets cost hundreds of dollars?

You can drive 36 hrs or only 2 if you fly there. You can shower a few times a day there. You can sleep 12 hrs or more per day. There are birds, bugs, praying mantises, grass and hot springs. Sky, clouds, sunrises and fool moons are amazing. There is the most amazing art I've ever seen. There are dozens of soundsystems with interesting music. There are 35 000 people from all over the world. There's no other event like this on the whole earth. And there's no Fixer  ;D. Cheapest tickets costed $180 this year. And you know that Jeff.

Damon – they said the venue is charging by the head. So its NOT losing $40 if they charge $20 and the venue charges $30. If the venue charges $30, the LOSE money at $20.

I did not start the whole “discount” thing. ;D

I said “$20” as an example. I think it's still better to let few extra people (who could show up only for 2nd night because of …… ) for less and get some money/lose less than get no one and earn 0/lose more.

BUT.

It's not my event. Not my money. Promoteurs know better. I'm going to shut up.

Well, I get the venue head charge thing finally, and yes you are losing money that way.  I understand that you have to charge 40 for that reason (if it really is 30 a head).  Can you please avoid being so elitist about the “tribe” though?  3 hour drive and 40 bucks for one night of something you've never experienced before that is supposed to be awesome just isn't a good selling point for newbies to the scene, especially when it is compounded by calling them “tribal dues.”  I may not even know what the hell psytrance is if I had to pay that much money the first time I went to a party.  I also know that my first experience with this kind of thing might not have happened if it had been this sort of party…unless I was able to feesibly go only one night.  Sure I would have been kicking myself afterwards, but I would have for sure gone.

That's just my 2 cents.  Maybe we don't want to try to get new people involved and we should just focus on the community that has already developed.  But then again, more people=more money=bigger better parties, or at least ones that break even.

48 hour psy-trance festivals only appeal to a certain percentage of people. Even if we charged $20 for the fest it wouldn't magically bring in hundreds of more people to make up the difference in revenue of higher prices. In order for us to break even we have to charge those who are into the music and scene a little more. Even that said every fest we or others throw brings in people I have never seen before. Us and other promotion groups do throw cheaper events as well, but these larger fest cost more money to throw.

All over the US psy festivals have to charge upwards of $50-$100 to break even. This is because they know even at $20 a head they will still only get 200-350 people. We choose to go the middle ground and do $30-$50 two day fests. Geologic was our most expensive party and we had the most people there!

The other thing is that higher prices can keep out those who want to come and just get “fucked” up. We don't want those people.. I'd also prefer to rely on our dedicated crowd than hope for 150 “newbies” to make up the difference. Nothing against newbies, we love em! 🙂

would a 3 hour drive and $30 at the door really make a difference? If someone was interested in trying the fest out we do have pre-sales for them to save money..
