psycherhexicMemberi like diplo a bit..
but abe.. do you not eat or use any animal products? or do you just not eat meat?
where do you shop? did you take baby steps or quit cold turkey?
just wondering.. as I sort of want to go that route.
I am not sure if i'm 100% against eating meat… but like most precious things in life, they longer you go without them the better they are. Also its unhealthy right? and thats my main concern at this point.
I just can't seem to go a day without any animal products. Any good books/reference material?
emilybobemilyGuestI love cheese.
PookztAMemberBen,
I try to avoid all animal products, but I currently use regular butter and regular cheese. I hope to eliminate those from my diet someday with vegetarian-friendly substitutes. Already have gotten some good suggestions from Nod on this…
as for a source, sorry but I don't have a good one. I took a class my last semester at the University of Iowa called “Plants and Human Affairs”, which helped me get over my laziness / stubborness and finally just commit to being a vegetarian.
Still though, I am non-strict, meaning, when I go home to see my Mom, I request that shes tries her best to stick to non-meat dishes, but if one night she chooses to make something with meat I sure do eat it and don't let it go to waste.
My main reasons for being a vegetarian are:
1. Help end animal cruelty by getting my nutrients and protein from vegetable sources, so that I help to reduce the world's demand for meat, which ultimately results in there being a less animals killed / less animals having to suffer just so I can get my nutrients.
2. Help reduce green house gasses by reducing my reliance on farm animals like cows, which produce Methane. Although Methane comprises a very low percentage of the total green house gasses, it is by far one of the most potent green house gasses, meaning one molecule of Methane does way more “global warming” than one molecule of carbon dioxide.
3. Something like 1/3 of the inhabitable surface of our planet is used for raising live stock to meat the world's demand for meat, and another 1/3 of the inhabitable surface of the planet is used to grow feeder crops for that large livestock population, so if we all ate more vegetables, we would not need to use as much space for those two things, so we would have a lot more space to live, and we would be able to grow far more crops for ourselves to eat directly, rather than growing crops, feeding them to animals, then eating the animals. (plus, as i mention below, by choosing to not eat the plants directly, we get less energy per gram of food and less quality energy per gram of food, because those plants first have to pass through the 4 stomachs of a cow before becoming the meat which we then eat.)
4. Help to improve my health by eating more plants, not only because they are the primary producers of the world (they are the closest you can get to eating sunlight directly, which is a good thing because energy degrades as it gets reconsumed by higher trophic levels such as herbivors then carnivores), but also because the fiber in plants help keep you regular. You see, a lot of people do not eat enough vegetables these days, and because of this, as the feces passes through their intestinal tract, it does not contain very much indegestible plant fiber (cellulose). Because of this, the fecal matter builds up on the walls of your intestines, especially your large intestine (colon), which eventually results in constipation, colon cancer, and other illnesses. By eating a diet rich in plant fiber, which is indegestible, you basically are introducing lots of little particles to your digestive tract that help to scrape out / clean out your GI tract. So, by eating lots of plant fiber, you are essentially helping to clean out your GI tract on a daily basis. This is great, because you will greatly reduce your risk of getting colon cancer or other types of GI cancers, plus, you won't need to have a colon cleansing done someday, which is painful and uncomfortable because they have to shove a big tube up your anus and flush out your GI tract with a high-powered water jet to remove the build up that accumulates over the years.it is not hard to do, you just have to commit, and I also recommend starting out non-strict, so that if you truly are craving some meat once in a while, you can go ahead and eat it. even eating one less meat-containing dish per day can really help the world, because if it adds up, and if we all did that together, damn the world would be a better place.
thanks for asking

Have you seen the documentary Food Inc.? Excellent and informative.
I've been vegetarian for 14 years. You can quit cold turkey, or just start by cutting out red meat and pork. There's lots of ways to do it! Get a few good vegetarian cookbooks. Invite your friends for veggie potlucks. It's fun, and once you ween away from meat addiction, you see how much healthier you feel, let alone how much less your grocery bill is!
