sorry to break the fun digression … or damons indigestion in this case but want to respond to something Nate mentioned earlier about being asked to play at the Chill stage.

I think it would make a world of a difference is organizers didn't create the chill stage lineups from spillovers from the main stage. like … oh sorry, no more slots on main … would you be interested in playing some chill DJ DemonSpawnfromHell ?

Bassive respect for you Nate for saying no off the bat but there are many who'd jump at the oppertunity of a chance to play… doesn't matter where how when. “just lemme play.”

The party experience will not evolve that way …. we need more DJs who plan and chart their music experience rather than just spin whatever they have. 

Please respect the Chill lineup as you would the Main stage. If there are open slots then it's fine… let it ride. Better have a mixed ambient CD playing than have a DJ who is out of his/her element.

(good example of the former…the Illinois halloween barnparty with the hidden scary ambient sounds in the house … was freaked out at the time but the memory of the enviroment it created is forever etched in my brain + the absence of the DJ created a supernatural effect … just you and the music )

A break from Chill would also mean more focus on the dancefloor so those gaps can definitely be planned out strategically.

If the intent is a CHILL stage, then only book people who actually want to play chill. Maybe ask some people if they want extended sets? I'm pretty sure Scatter and Anita can go on for days…

Also – maybe set up a projector and play some whacked out movies at some point during the quiet time?

I always get the grass is greener over there syndrome with too many stages.

This was a huge problem for me @ Burning Man. I never wanted to commit to listening to a DJs whole set because I was afraid I would be missing something at one of the other hundreds of sound stages out there.

Sheesh … the very first one … Geologic had 3 stages. Still talk about that one to people who are just getting into IDM.

There were only a few chillout djs at Geologic. I remember Underfoot played for 3 or 4 hours, and then myself for 12… then they took away the CDJ's. It was fun to play for so long (especially since I got to meet Varun and Damon for the first time), but it would've been nice if more djs had been interested in playing chill music.
One major problem was Chillstage was located at top of the hill far away from most things except for some campers. But, if I ever wanted to see/hear what was happening in the cave, I just had to walk to the edge and peer down. If partygoers ever wanted to “chill” they had to climb that pain-in-the-ass hill.

One idea is to stop referring to it as chillstage, and call it something else, like 2nd stage (Altered/Alternative stage) or something, so you can have more diverse sounds/tempos there without offending people's expectations.

I guess I'm in the minority that does't want chill stage to become an alternative stage. I personally don't want to hear house, minimal techno, hip hop, happy hardocore, drill'n'bass or electro on chill stage.

I never chimed in on this discussion… but I'm with you on this one, Damon.
The chill stage is supposed to be an escape from the insanity environment creaetd on psytrance stage; when done properly it can get pretty intense even for experienced individuals. If someone gets overwhelmed by the music, lights, visuals, whatever at the psy stage there needs to be a safe haven to retreat to until they've got their thoughts in order. Where else are they going to go? Put earplugs in an hide in their tent??? No fun 🙂

Chill stage music should be soothing, beautiful, and healing. I wouldn't go so far as to keep it completely ambient 24/7… but keeping it always under 120 bpm (and under 100 bpm in most cases) is best practice IMO.
