wont add much to the chill-nochill debate but I do have a few incidents which seem to be within this sphere of discussion…

A.U.M. : Damon & I were spinning some chill… went into Ultimae sounds, then took off into Aes Dana's more bassheavy tracks and before we knew it it was 135 and we were asked to chill-down. since everything was in flow we pretty much cut it down there… let the next couple of DJs spin and spent the rest of the day spacing out in the dome.

Chicago party : Started playing on the chill stage, after Shai finished her set at 135. People were dancing so played with the flow and before I knew it the energy had pushed it upto 145. The owner came out freaking because of the volume… again, it was in the midst of flow but I changed the track anyway… down to some really chill material. wasn't feeling it so immediately handed the console over to the next DJ who played beautifully.

A Kolkata nightclub… Was requested to come and spin after the Punditz while their set was on (after being yes-no'ed for 2 days)… quickly rushed home, packed CDs and arrived right as they were finishing their last track. Started off with Dub and moved into Breaks… 20 minutes into the set the resident DJ tries to kick me off to play some top20 house. After all that running around I decided I didn't want to leave. 5 mins later I was probably the most pissed off I've ever been. Created a massive rift between the professional DJs in that club and our organisation and am never setting foot in the in the one club in the city that did play some form of electronic music regularly.

So yeah … who ever the organizer might be…be it a friend, a professional or just another gandu… it doesn't pay to get aggressive. If you're asked to change your music you really should have 2 choices.

    1. Change
    2. Stop playing

Personally 2 has always worked for me as feeling the flow is the biggest part of playing a set. If someone's trying to oust you from the console, flow will get inevitably get broken so just let it be. There will always be an oppertunity to shine … and ALL the pieces fit together when it does happen.

and for the ego warriors, just start doing your own thing if you don't feel the organisation is upto your standard. Thats what we're doing in Kolkata now… throwing proper psytrance parties at the competitors club.  😉

doesn't pay to get angry or whine. if its about music then let that speak for you.

you really should have come and spun at Iowa Anand… would have made 10X more of an impact than starting this thread.

One idea is to stop referring to it as chillstage, and call it something else, like 2nd stage (Altered/Alternative stage) or something, so you can have more diverse sounds/tempos there without offending people's expectations.

I guess I'm in the minority that does't want chill stage to become an alternative stage. I personally don't want to hear house, minimal techno, hip hop, happy hardocore, drill'n'bass or electro on chill stage. I'm aware that biggest festivals like Boom or Sonica have incorporated a shitload of different styles into their lineups. I'm pretty sure there are hundreds of people among thousands that will like it. Here in our backyard I don't think it will make any big difference in terms of bringing fresh blood to the festivals. Well you'll have more djs – that's for sure  ;D

Let the chill stay chill  8)

    +1

and I like Machis suggestion too

    3 stages. Psy,Chill,Alternative.

Almost all outdoor parties that have gone through a 3-4 year cycle end up there. More parties create more DJs. Expedition was a good example.

Sheesh … the very first one … Geologic had 3 stages. Still talk about that one to people who are just getting into IDM.

It's a great solution when you have 100s of people@party. When you have 150-250 people here in MIDWEST you have chill stage empty for the most of the time and small crowd (ocassionally) on main stage.

Chill stage was active only till Saturday early afternoo so it doesn't count  😛

3 stages would be fine with crowds of 500+, but with 200-250 you will only get a few people at each stage, and you risk not creating any dance floor vibe.

That is the whole problem with multi-genre events with ten stages and 400 people as your lucky to get 20 in front of stage at a time and it feels like everything is disjointed. I always get the grass is greener over there syndrome with too many stages.

I like the psy stage, groove/alt stage, chill stage idea. But only if we got 500 people. And most the time I don't want to deal with that many people. (Mo' people mo' problems..)

Plus getting enough dj's to cover another stage brings up the budget quite a bit.

I also think 36 hours of just “psychill” music gets a bit old as well.

    “Geologic had 3 stages”

the chill stage never had a real lineup, as we didn't know enough “chill dj's”” at the time..

I think that is the ideal setup “if” we want try getting 500-700 people..

the chillout should be beatless ambient, psy should be full power (hardcore/dark/?!?/forresty/whatever) all night through the morning and turn to scandinavian styles in the afternoon and evening. no full on, no twilight, no progressive, no breaks, no electro, no oldschool goa, no downtempo and noone from the midwest should be allowed to play.

think that would be a fucking solid party.

    erm…
what are we talking about again ???

oh yeah … Geologic… yeah, the 3 stage setups definitely only for a big crowd.
can never forget that chill stage though… birth of the chillumafia. 🙂

IMHO there's more than enough different subgenres within “chill music” to cover 3 days and there's no need to bring all those subgenres I mentioned above  😛

Who the fuck took cdjs away? I was looking for them for (at least) half a day ….  >:( 😉

considering your behaviour at the last party I assume you will be responsible for providing fart sounds…

As far as getting more people…

You'd get more people with three stages. For proof of this, come to one of our shows…
