    What sort of freedom?

    Q.1. What is economic freedom?

Economic freedom is the fundamental right of every human to control his or her own labor and property. In an economically free society, individuals are free to work, produce, consume, and invest in any way they please, with that freedom both protected by the state and unconstrained by the state. In economically free societies, governments allow labor, capital and goods to move freely, and refrain from coercion or constraint of liberty beyond the extent necessary to protect and maintain liberty itself.

    Says who?

The Heritage Foundation is a conservative American think tank based in Washington, D.C.

The foundation took a leading role in the conservative movement during the presidency of Ronald Reagan, whose policies drew significantly from Heritage's policy study Mandate for Leadership.[1] Heritage has since continued to have a significant influence in U.S. public policy making, and is widely considered to be one of the most influential research organizations in the United States, especially during the Republican administration of President George W. Bush.[2]

Heritage's stated mission is to “formulate and promote conservative public policies based on the principles of free enterprise, limited government, individual freedom, traditional American values, and a strong national defense.”[3]

Funny that they identify Canada as a fully functioning democracy… this is anything but the truth.

I choose to stay and try to improve our country. As shitty as some things are here, I cannot deny that I owe my education, and many other things, to this country. Yes, I could have gotten those things elsewhere, but because I got them from here, I want to give back to this country by helping improve it.

    Just my 2 cents.

Interesting article Robyo, thanks for posting it

I thought it was interesting as well.

@Xeno, thanks for checking up on Heritage Foundation. Not sure what point you are trying to make by quoting wikipedia, but it was good to read up on them. Incidentally, the article was also sponsored by Wall Street Journal (another conservative institution). I can't think of any place that is an ideal “fully functioning democracy.” Australia looks pretty good though!

My point was simply that “freedom” is a relative concept… and this index is based more on the conservative idea of economic freedom i.e. low taxes and that sort of thing.
