U.S. to disclose stockpiles of nuclear weapons
    MSNBC News | May 3rd, 2010

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Monday the Obama administration will disclose the number of weapons in its nuclear arsenal, a closely guarded secret for more than a half-century.

Clinton told a U.N. conference that the move is aimed at improving transparency in the nuclear disarmament regime and encouraging other nations to comply with it.

“Beginning today, the United States will make public the number of nuclear weapons in our stockpile and the number of weapons we have dismantled since 1991,” she said. “So for those who doubt that the United States will do its part on disarmament, this is our record, these are our commitments and they send a clear unmistakable signal.”

My 2 cents: This is why I remain indifferent, and even somewhat supportive of Obama, because of stuff like this. For all the bad stuff people accuse the administration of, I see lots of good stuff too. Go Obama Go!

Whenever the government releases information, it's usually because that's what they want you to believe. i have a feeling that no matter the number of nukes we say we have they all aren't accounted for.  (she may say we have a million when we have none, just to keep canada inline, eh?)

ya i agree with you, but still, the fact that we are putting out a number still is a good thing in my opinion. the very fact that we are discussing it and bringing other countries' attention to the fact that we have tons of nukes is a good thing in my opinion. i think it may encourage more dialogue and diplomacy in terms of reducing the number of nukes in the world. plus, if our government lies by purposefully overestimating or underestimating the number of nukes we have, it will give other countries a chance to call us out if they find out we are lying 🙂

the example you gave is the opposite of what i would expect. if anything, i would guess we would underestimate our nuke count, so that other countries do not get pissed, and so that we can keep a more 'secret' stock of nukes as we 'get rid of' the publicized nukes that we reveal.

regardless, i am hoping that this will reduce the amount of nukes in the world.

long shot, but it would be nice if we could get Israel to participate in this whole 'nuke transparency' movement… 🙂

5,113 is the number they gave. Down from 30,000+ during the height of the cold war.

i wonder what word that equates to in Hebrew.

it would be funny if 5113 = nuke

    5113 eh? nice.

    i like this part:

Obama has put the treaty at the center of his ambitious nuclear agenda. It is essentially a bargain: The five initial nuclear powers promise to gradually destroy their stockpiles, while other countries pledge to never develop them. In exchange, the other countries get help on developing nuclear energy programs, subject to U.N. monitoring.

the bargain seems good, i mean, no nukes in this world is a great thing. what about other weapons we don't know about? nukes are 50+ year old technology. i'm sure we have weapons out there far worse. neutron bomb anyone?
