wow man this is great news! thanks for alerting us to this KO 🙂

I must ask you, if Dark Matter is made of particles that can pass through normal matter unimpeded, how will they learn more about Dark Matter's true function in the Universe? how can you run experiments on Dark Matter?

    very tricky to think about…

sweet post KO. happy holidays sir!

    ;D ;D

To answer your question, it's simple to do this, they've done the same for the detection of neutrinos. They basically create a type of wobble effect (not like dubstep though) on other matter since they have mass and momentum so they create a bend in space and time that we can measure.

    Happy Holidays to you too!

no no no i was not asking how do they detect it….

i was wondering what kind of experiments can they do with the dark matter now that they have detected its existence?

Make more dark psy of course!

I don't think they can “work” with dark matter directly since it is so weak.  Proving it's existence indirectly and possibly confirming it's “weight/mass/size/abundance” can prove or disprove whether DM is responsible for galaxies remaining cohesive.  What technological innovation will come about from confirming DM and it's role…I'm not sure but it's important.

i agree 🙂 seems like great news 😀

Ah, I read that wrong. I just thought it was funny cause Andy started this topic, not me :).

To answer your question: I don't know, they'd have to have a confirmed discovery first since it's kinda of hard to determine what exactly the stuff is right now. Basically scientists came up with the term dark matter to account for the gravitational spin of quasars out in the distance, but since we only know of its existence through indirect measurement we only know it's affect on matter, not much about the stuff itself.

I would assume they would run some tests on its gravitational affects on matter since this is the main concern of scientists studying dark matter (basically trying to create formulas and fit dark matter into a scientific model).

There will also be a ton of work to be done if they discover it to assign a particle to the force (much like how every other force in the universe, except gravity, has one). This might have to wait for the LHC though, same with the graviton.
