I just can't abide the idea of psy trance serving as convenient background noise to people's art shows and/or drug benders.  To me (and I'm just one guy) trance dance is THE reason.  Pretty tapestries and stunning acrobatics are awesome, but incidental.  I like communing with people — talking, sharing — but the best moments of any trance party happen on the dancefloor, where knowing glances are silently exchanged while minds journey inward.

Jeeez… background? What the hell are You talking about? Wanna talk to Your friends over the cup of tea? Go to fuckin' chillout room …. ;D

    I think

    I just

    my

    I

    mine

“I” thinks it is best to leave “it” as undefined as possible.  No definitions of “it” are really needed.  Like minded people, common music interest, common artistic interest, everyone is respected, no one is censored, all can co-exist just fine, everyone brings “something”, try different things, if an idea is valid it will take hold and people will dig it.  If not then it will become self evident and people won't bother with it.  Let the people decide!!!

Sorry you didn't like the set, in any case.  The last thing that we are is lazy or unkind – we care quite a bit about providing a good show for people and making sure that they had a good time.

please don't think I hated it… just some (constructive) criticism is all. I appreciate what you guys do. It's good to see psy live P.A.! I dig the aspect that you play handsonic over the beats. But you guys have to be conscious of your levels. For one thing, it was rare when we could actually hear you over what the other guys were doing. And of course there were noticable differences in level between the different tracks and the overall muddiness of the sound. But please don't despair, keep doing what you love  🙂

Also, my comments weren't just directed at you guys (or Scott), but an overall generalization, really. I certainly don't think you guys are unkind or lazy, it's just something you need to be aware of.  I'm a professional sound guy and I'm just trying to put out some wisdom for people to glean. Maybe I sounded too self-rightous or something, sorry. It IS a big issue with me, though…

Hey, no worries.  I talked to the rest of the guys about changing the way that we do things a bit to prevent this kind of thing from happening in the future (or at least, the futures where we don't get to pre-check the sound – hehe)

I found your criticism very constructive, for sure, that's why I'm trying to have a dialogue with you about it :^)

I'm curious as to if maybe you were having a hard time hearing what I was doing because the percussion is so processed or whether or not it was a levels issue (it was hard to tell on stage).  Because Aaron is running my drums through tempo synced glitching and processing, it can have the appearance that I'm drumming like crazy but what actually gets out to the speakers might be gated or processed to such a degree that what you hear me do and what you see me do sounds different.

T'was more of a volume issue i think. The handsonic was drowned out by the (louder) sounds the other guys were making. Why would you gate it anyways?
By the way, i really enjoyed a lot of your guys' synth sounds. Your set reinforced my gearlust for the Novation X-station, a tight little synth and recording interface  🙂

Thinking about your 5 elements I would add this to my metaphor:

Spirit – the Unseen, the psychedelic energy field, the imaginal realm manifest

The Unseen plays a huge role in our parties. A number of people have noticed. I'm not going to try to explain it, it only diminishes it if I do.

in Musashi's “A Book of Five Rings”, he refers to the 5th element as “the Void”. Works the same way, I figure…

Before making flippant comments followed by adorable emoticons, Damon, you might want to actually read what you're responsing to.  In this case, the latter half of my statement — the bit that says “the best moments of any trance party happen on the dancefloor.”

    Sometimes yes. Sometimes not.

You misunderstand Damon. He is a member of the Secret Brotherhood of the La La Buttmunchers. What the normal citizen views as ridiculous and excessive use of emoticons, is actually an entire cypher language. I have been deciphering his emoticon messages and , boy , there's some pretty profound stuff in there. But I also noticed some references to activation of a Madison sleeper cell, and cryptic references to “Garden Gnomes” and “unleash the rabbits.” So you might want to raise your personal alert level to Orange, my friend.

Sometimes, the drum is gated repeatedly in order to get that chopped up, glitchy sound.  It's often run through a mountain of plugins (supatrigger, beatrepeat, and the like).

Thanks for the kind words re: the synth sounds.  The Novation X-Station was a relatively new addition; a lot of the sounds you hear are Virus KB, Waldorf Pulse, and some assorted soft synths.

    Do you produce as well?
