thefixerMemberWell LAH-DEE-DAH! Mr. Aggro! All I'm saying is that I prefer all the space on the dancefloor I can get. Performers like SPUNN have their place : large, outdoor areas. Indoors they only make things congested.
I got news for both of you music geeks. SPUNN is a huge part of the ambience anywhere they go; I can't speak for the big clubs and Connexionism, because that wasn't a Chilluminati event, but SPUNN has done indoor work at some other parties I have attended and I don't hear many complaints about them. Lots of people come to events for the kinetic performances not just music. I know the DJs are often just interested in the music but IMHO the music alone does not make it a psy party.
I do believe that SPUNN needs to communicate well with party organizers about how/where they spin, but so far they seem to do a good job of that.
They are not Gods, though, and I do not worship Them. ;D
EklypzMemberThis is not reflected at spunn but all my events I put the performers off to the side or in the back. It is really disrespectful to the dj to have them right in front of them in my opinion. I do this with break circles and such too. If people want they can go back and watch the performers and not distract at all.

For the record I LOVE Spunn and all they do. I LOVE all the fire peeps actually, especially with sexyyyy hoops, maybe get rid of everything but hoops and candle dances yeah thatis it 😀

Yeah, sorry about the sound issues. The soundguy for the club was nowhere to be found so we unfortunately did not have the opportunity to really sound test to make sure that we were EQed properly for the room.
In any case, all sound problems aside, we had a wonderful time performing for everybody and we're thankful that Troy and Julee and everybody else involved decided to bring us up to play again. Bluetech was amazing, but no surprise there. I've been a Bluetech fan for a long time and it was a real treat getting to finally meet him in person. It's always a pleasure when you meet a favorite artist and they end up being as down to earth and friendly as their music leads you to hope that they are.
I really liked the twisted stuff that Kaiser Soze was playing as well.
spunn as usual was very visually appealing – I also really dug the visuals that T & J were projecting, outstanding work as usual.
Over all, I had a great time at this event, as we always seem to do in Chicago – great scene that you guys have here – people are very friendly and it was quite nice to recognize so many folks from the cave rave (aka geologic) as well as the astral project show the first time around at Vision :^)

It's much more interesting to watch talented performers while listening to great music than JUST listening to dj (especially psytrance – correct me if I'm wrong – who do not seem to do too much while mixing tracks – I know psytrance is not very spectacular genre that allows djs to do tricks and stuff).

My biggest beef with SPUNN is that their half-naked bodies aren't nearly shiney enough when they are doing firedances. I really think they need to be oiled up, all of them, before they perform. I also believe that I am the man to do this for them. I will do it for free. I am that good.
EklypzMemberIt's not about watching the DJ mix, it's feeding energy back and forth from the dj and the crowd. The energetic interaction is what makes it for me.
I would never do this to one of my djs at an event unless it was planned ahead of time by the DJ or a breaks set with a break dance circle.

I agree that the DJs should be cool with how the performers, whoever they are, are using the space. I have been saying for a long time that DJs need to be part of the network and these things discussed fully ahead of time. Unfortunately the way things fall together frequently, there is often ZERO communication with the DJ. Things just happen and they have no advance notice of what is going on. That sucks and I hope we do better to not have that happen in the future.

damon try playing psy at a bar twice a week for 6 weeks straight. i have done it and i have goten better at equing and have had to make my self more enjoyable to watch. playing parties is so much easyer that doing clubs or bars. youd be suprized as to the tricks a psytrance dj and a good mixer can do.

The dj/performer is the master sound guy of the night. Yeah, there's usually someone else who's the designated “audio engineer” hanging around, but ultimately, it's up to the dj to make the room sound good. USE YOUR EARS! If it sounds shitty onstage, imagine what it sounds like on the dancefloor cornered by 4 PA rigs! Maybe it seems uncool to leave the mix position, but a good audio person patrols the room occasionally to get an idea of what the sound is like in the venue. It's kind of difficult to gauge this onstage with monitors going. Sometimes I temporarily kill the stage monitors just to hear what the floor sounds like…
I was watching very closely, and I didn't see I-string or Scott fuck with the mids and highs (eq) once! These are the most important bands to manipulate. You can turn the bass up to infinity and it won't hurt your ears (but possibly rupture internal organs) but the mids and highs absolutely kill your ears. I wonder how many people left the venue that morning with ringing ears???
Personally, I like to turn the bass up enough so folks can really feel it. Then, I turn down the mids so people can still converse (vocal sounds are in that freq. range) and tweak the highs according to the production value of the track…
It's pure laziness not to tweak the eq and unkind to the audience as well. It is also possible to enjoy super-compressed electronica music without slaying them with SPL's! Djing is more than track selection and mixing, it's about creating a comfortable environment where people can dance and have a good time without ending up with tinnitis! I know, I've suffered from tinnitis ever since my thrash/punk rock days…

I didn't mind SPUNN doing a short set on the dance floor. Those hulahoops are trippy! The cloth stuff is kinda lame after awhile… It was kind of them not to overextend themselves. They all took a turn or two and then they opened up the floor for everyone else, which I felt really revitalized the energy for Evan's set. After that, they did adjurn to the next room and continued their antics.
What is really annoying is when the music gets turned down so they can do their thing, like at Metatronic 2. That was super-lame! Otherwise, they add a very cool energy…

Well … how many DJs look at the crowd while mixing? So many of them just look at the fuckin mixer, light a cigarette or do other stupid things … no interaction …in those cases additional performance is imho more than needed.

Well, I'm kind of stuck behind the handsonic drumming during the set, and it's difficult for Josh or Aaron to get out from behind the laptops (they're not just playing tracks, they're assembling them on the fly – that's why not having the soundcheck hurt us; half the pa wasn't even powered on until right as people started walking in – through no fault of psymbolic, I might add) but I do see the point to what you're saying and I'll make sure to add it to our checklist, even if it means changing how we do things a bit.
Sorry you didn't like the set, in any case. The last thing that we are is lazy or unkind – we care quite a bit about providing a good show for people and making sure that they had a good time.
SozeKeymasterFrom that booth it was really hard to know what it sounded like on the dance floor. After the first 20 minutes I was told I was playing way too loud… I had no clue. The tech told me to play in two reds on the main output, but that was obviously way off.
I looked at the crowd quite a bit… but I had to lean over the mixer just to see half of the floor.
I hate raised booths… I want to be close to the crowd not towering above.
