I've been thinking about this lately and discussing it with a few people and wanted to get more people's thoughts on this subject.  Basically after going to Gemini and Gaian Mind I've noticed that those party's main stage seems to flow better simply due to the fact that they start out with progressive music rather than jumping straight into full-on, like we do.  I know that the midwest doesn't have as big of a prog following as west and east coasts (from what I've seen/heard from people I've talked to), but I think having atleast the first spot being prog would create a better flow (and possibly one in the morning say from 11am-noon).

I feel prog is better because it is slow enough that you can actually dance to it in time and still save energy for the rest of the party.  I think having prog first also creates an anticipation/anxiety (the good kind) for the psytrance to start.  Basically it creates a build up in energy.  I think it would be worth trying because no one usually dances to the first 1-2 sets anyway (I don't count standing still, tapping my toe as dancing) and this would actually add some movement to the dancefloor in the beginning.

Anyone else have thoughts on this?  I know I'm no expert on party throwing and haven't been around for a long time, but this is something I feel is worth discussing (especially since some other people who have been around for a while agreed/seemed like they thought it was a good idea).  Discuss!

I think it is upto the DJ to really know their time slot and the best music to play for it, I have noticed people have gotten better at it as they learn their craft.

That being said, I think a progression is always good!

agreed.. i even like dancey chill or breaks up to 10 pm.. Something with non 4/4 kick drums..

Having slower music in the beginning makes the crazy stuff at night that much crazier too, since you don't get acclimated to the beat down.

Yeah, unfortunately not many psy djs also play prog.  Not that full-on in inapropriate for an opening slot time, it just feels like it's too abrupt of a transition from silence to ~145bpm.

Also, in the Midwest I think DJ's have grown accustomed to playing fullon/power that early, so they assume that is what is to be played or what people want. Even if they can play prog..

Maybe we should find some prog only djs to play that slot then.  It sounded phenomenal at Gaian Mind when that prog dj from new york played.

I think we need more variety all around. The dark needs to peak out even darker than it does, there needs to be more melodic music on either side of the dark, and people need to take more chances instead of catering to the other DJ's. Honestly, would it be so bad to close the stage with a deep house DJ? Something soulful and epic at the same time? Maybe start with Prog house, go to prog breaks, then prog psy, then to the full on, then the twighlight, then the normal dark, then over the top dark, and then start rolling it back in reverse till morning?  I know some really good prog house/breaks guys that would do it. One lives in Iowa and would be an easy booking…

You realize theres a bunch of ladies who feel that way about the dark, right? I think theres a bit too much concentration on pleasing the other DJ's and a bit more listening to what some of the audience likes as well. We're talking about the noon slots here, it's too hot anyways. Some 120 bpm sexy music isn't going to kill us… There IS psyhouse as well, Ticon and such…

i agree on the prog, watching Deet open the psytrance stage at Gaian Mind proved that point to me.  🙂

I'm all for progressive in the beginning, end and in the middle (fuck I can also play progressive :D). I'd like to hear Scatter or Derby playing their shit more often …

And I don't think house music@psytrance party is a good idea unless you wanna do multigenre raves ….. (I also don't think eurotrance stuff is appropriate for chill) …

i have had that experience as well with working with and playing at bar/club gigs.  progression is key. I love the fact that i play Psy, if a show is done right that means i usally play later in the event (non psy).  but my thoughts on just psy events would be: “progressive”, Melodic(not uplifting type), Full-on, hard full-on, hard minimal, psy core, and back the other direction till we get back to Melodic again where we can do the up lifting then back to prog.  that and this way there is a better chance on creating a “Trance” with the partiers that we are there to play for.  i personally like to play durring sunset or just befor or just after on the first night.  its fun for me and i am sure its fun for others.  gives a chance to dance with out the mental abuce that is comming in the hours after.
