cosmicvibrationsMemberwhether people are smart about it or not, i've had bad experiences with “authorities” without any illegal things even involved in the situation… personally, i certainly would not want any police officers lurking around at a psytrance party when i've been beat up just for wearing “suspicious clothing”… just a thought.

The article will feature interviews with myself, Chris, and Nick, and also Primordial Ooze, Androcell, and some scientists from the University of Iowa and their comments on the neural properties of the music!

dude the police dont care, they have been to our events, stopping by for nearly 2 years now, in Cedar Rapids, and now Iowa City. they have observed people smoking weed illegally at our events (shame on those that were so obvious), and then let the offenders go free to continue dancing for the evening without a search or anything! they have never done anything to attempt to shut any event down. the following reason(s) will give you a better idea as to why the community and the police are so supportive / non-caring about our events:
this town has one major plague, and that is ALCOHOL. the bars here allow for 19+ entry, but claim only 21+ drinking. this town ruins kids lives by turning them into bar slaves right from the start of freshman year, with silly binge-drinking events like bar crawls, $1 drink specials, Girls Gone Wild events, MTV Rap Battle competitions, Studio 54 nights, Pimps and Ho's theme events, ETC ETC ETC. the town is growing more and more sick of the concentrated polluted area downtown, known as the PEDESTRIAN MALL, where not even cars are allowed to drive so that drinking pedestrians can have priority and easy access to multiple alcohol-vending establishments. every year the town tries to over throw the law by having a vote to make all the bars go 21+. EVERY YEAR. and every year they get closer to doing it, but enough students step up to the voting ballots to keep the bars 19+. the town is growing increasingly frustrated, as their main influx of tourists are either parents moving their students in or out of the town, or college kids coming from AROUND THE MIDWEST to just come binge drink, break shit, start fights, puke on themselves, piss in peoples yards, break into houses that arent theres, etc. etc. etc. Not to mention, RAPE has become such a major problem in this town that the police have implemented a NIGHT RIDE service, where females can call and get a ride from the bars to anywhere that they live in Iowa City, no matter what time it is. serious RAPE incidents occur frequently enough every year, that it is becoming an increasingly big deal. House parties happen every weekend, houses fill full of underage drinkers that dont have fake IDs or friends in the bar scene that can get them drunk. houses pack FULL of kids, spilling out into the front yard, and onto the side walk and street. Cops rarely even bust these ridiculous events, as they are so common and frequent, so instead, they mainly stick downtown. this is where most of the police energy is directed, towards downtown, and preventing the spread of the alcohol-induced behavior beyond the pedestrian mall. every weekend there is 4-6 police cars that just remain parked in the pedestrian mall, as cops walk in and out of every bar, lookin for underage drinkers, overly drunk people, cocaine dealers, and everything else. the bars is where the plague is most prevalent.
the cops know who we are, they know what our parties are like, and i really think they are beginning to value the fact that we are providing people with a great, alcohol-free alternative, bringing people in from all over the midwest to spend their money in Iowa, bringing recognition and credibility to Iowa City in terms of recreational activities, and more.
the point here is: our events can happen anywhere, including a BAR. even at a BAR, they are still less of a threat to the community and the police force than any other bar on that evening. Psytrance events are not even close to as bad as an alcohol-fueled Ultimate Fighting Championship event, or Playboy tour event, or Girls Gone Wild tour event, as our events portray PEACE, RESPECT, NON VIOLENCE, and more.
trust me, the Cops already know about us, and soon, the entire town will. this is the only place where Psytrance can be so public in my opinion, in a setting where high-achieving, motivated students can present the parties for what they truly are. the University is helping us, and i promise you, they will continue to do so.
even if police come through, even if a security guard runs through the parking lot once, it will be NO DIFFERENT than it has ever been before. a quick stop through to make sure things are under control and not out of hand. so just be smart about what you do, help others to be smart, and no one is going to pry their way into your business.
only those that throw rocks at the bear are the ones to get eaten.
we are so lucky to have this alcohol-infested, open minded campus town to do these parties, because in any other place, id say Psytrance looks suspicious. here, it looks like the best fucking alternative to the bars that there ever has been, and will continue to be, for quite some time.
To wrap this up:
This town needs these events to keep happening. We are creating a wave of change in the mindsets of young individuals who are looking for inspiration, and the opportunity to find themselves. The more people that come and have an amazing good time being lost in the one true drug that is available, which is the MUSIC, the more people will pledge their support to helping us get the word out to others.
P.S. – sorry for the length of the post, but i fully wanted to convey to any readers why these events are getting bigger and bigger, and why law enforcement is not something to worry about.

cosmicvibrationsMember^ agreed. i think that everyone reading this thread is quite aware that alcohol is a bigger public health risk than anything than pretty much anything that's used at these events, bar tobacco… that doesn't change their legal status, so there is definitely reason to be cautious.

Agreed. See Madison, WI as a point of reference. College Party Town USA. Similar situation At the turn of the decade, EDM was the alternative to the Bar scene, all it took was one or two drug-related deaths (come on don't take things when you have a heart condition and for Jeebu's sake don't partake excessively.) to bring the party crashing down. Hard. Now I don't think that we really have to worry too much as Madison didn't have the community support that the psy-scene does, we know how to take care of our own and to take care of newcomers, I do agree that care should be taken to make sure that nothing like what has happened to many an event in the past, but at psy parties I see many of those steps taken already. Responsible people handling the door, eloquent people around to handle discussions with authorities (See tyler at Earthdance last year for point of refrence), people making sure people aren't doing stupid shit right out in the open. But alas nothing is always 100% so we should all take care of each other. Last thing I want to do is face a ticket for something some dumbass pulled. But I trust in Nick, Chris, Abe and the MoP'ers, they know their territory enough to know what's smart and what isn't.

LeoI hardly think a streaker would be cause enough for the Iowa City cops to shut down an event. I think Abe is spot on. While it shouldn't be taken as the norm, everyone can do their part to ensure the events go on smartly and safely. If you see someone blatantly doing something illegal or even questionable, talk to them about it.
