What do you think about it?

AscensionKeymasterIt all depends on how much you're willing to spend. If you like spending lots of money, get a mac. I got this laptop and I still think it's the best deal ( http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/HP-Pavilion-dv2842se-14-1-Widescreen-Special-Edition-Laptop-DV2842SE/sem/rpsm/oid/207715/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do ). I don't even think you can get a 1GB mac for that cheap. Most everyone here will tell u to go with a mac because they are better, but it's really just a matter of how much you can spend. If you can afford it/think it's reasonable, get a mac.
So far that laptop has run ableton without any bumps.

Macs are great computers, but as Kevin said… quite expensive. You'll be looking at $1300 base price for a new Macbook; more if you want to upgrade the hard disk space / system memory. New DELL laptops start much much lower, at like $750.

You'd probably want more than just the $1300 Macbook, too.AscensionKeymasterThe only thing I could have wanted more from my computer was a faster processor, but 4gb ram and a 64 bit system on an hp for under $750 is ridiculously good. The Cnet review was saying how awesome it was to get 4gb ram at the normal price of $1050, so yeah…. 🙂

Raven.NightsMemberFor me it was a matter of quality, both construction and components. Apple has pretty good support (as long as you are still covered that is) and if there is an apple store near you, getting it serviced is a breeze (half an hour to replace a screen that wasn't broken, for free. (it just had a piece of gunk stuck between the screen)) Now as far as use goes, theres really no difference in my eyes between using Ableton on a mac and a PC. The program is the same (minor differences such as file locations not included). However there are advantages and disadvantages to both. When using a midi controller with a PC, if you forget to turn it on, you need to restart Abbleton to get it working again (on an older computer this can be painful and definitely bad during a live situation) where as on a mac, all i need to do is hit the midi button in ableton to remap midi and bam!. Now there are a few VST's that are not available for mac (due to lazy coders “wah i cant take the time to port this to mac”) But if you do not use effects a lot this is not as much of a problem as honestly I can think of one VST that I would like available for mac that is only available for pc. Now my only other complaint really about macs is the lack of soundforge for mac, now everyone will say “use audacity, its free”, which is true, but it is also buggy, I had to spend an hour recently looking up how to find .tmp files in osx to put a set that didnt save completely back together.Â
But gripes aside I would say if you can afford a mac, get it, the full size firewire ports are sweet (helloo powered firewire), you can use windows if you want on the same machine and even have it virtualized right in OSX. It's the best decision I've made.

well save up money so you can at least get something that is not less that $1200, honestly I can't trust anything lower than that due to the quality of components that are used in those machines.

I think I'm the only person in the world who uses vista and likes it. I crank the shit outa my laptop and it runs just fine.

FYI
If you get an OEM edition of Vista Business or Vista Ultimate you can “downgrade” to Windows XP.
The process involves formatting, installing XP, then activating XP over the phone using your Vista key. You have to call Microsoft.Keep in mind that you have to check yourself to make sure that all the components of your machine are XP compatible though. SATA hard drives, for example, are not natively supported under Windows XP and require the use of a 3.5″ floppy with drivers at install time. Other hardware lacks Vista drivers entirely.

I'm good at out ninja-ing my computer, which is why my dell didnt have problems for over 4 years 🙂 and I WAILED on that thing hehe

I've never really understood why people believe there's such a huge diff between the two. Aside from the obvious fact that pcs are targeted by more viruses (not that hard to defend against anyway), I don't see a huge swinging point between the two. As far as build quality, that always seems hit or miss. Most people think dells are made of crap parts, but like I said, I had mine for over 4 years with no hardware problems. Is there actually concrete evidence of the difference? If I can get a laptop like mine for so cheap, is there a good reason to spend 3x as much on a similar mac? I'm not mac bashin or anything, I'm just curious if there's proof or it's all just heresay.
