[edit: did not mean to delete this following sentence, so I readded it below in brackets. it was originally here but i accidently deleted it during editing somehow]

[Machi, I have not purchased a good water filter myself, I just use a Brita which sucks but that is all I can afford right now, but here is some advice a fellow medical student gave me.]

One of the medical students that replied to the information had already heard about this and looked into it for himself, and he was just as concerned as I was. In fact, he has already purchased a water filter that is rather affordable. It removes Fluoride, Arsenic, and other heavy metal ions from our water.

Here is the filter system he purchased:

    Replacement Filter: http://www.bigberkeywaterfilters.com/berkey-filter-replacements-c-67/pf-2-arsenic-and-fluoride-water-filters-2-p-188

    That is a great reply to Machi's simple question  ;D ;D ;D

Except now we need to know how quickly it leaves the body, because you can't just say because we ingest over the lethal dose over the course of a year that it is bad.  On any given day by your calculations we're only ingesting at the maximum 1.3% of the lethal dose.  Doesn't seem like that big of a deal to me, even if it sticks around in your fat cells or something.  We need to know how long it takes for the Ca-F to be replaced by normal calcium again, or how long our body takes to rid flouride ions from the bloodstream.  Or even at what level of accumulation it starts permanently affecting the pineal gland.

fluoride??? just use them freaky water filters….problem solved. NEXT!

    Machi,

My Brita water filter specifically says, “This filter leaves a healthy amount of flouride in your drinking water”.

i read it on the package just a few days ago. at least it filters out other stuff… but not flouride. 🙁

    Problem unsolved…

Guess, Pook had an unsolved problem over the last few months but chose to divert attention to other 'pressing' issues I guess  ;D ;D

    Phil,

I know some gets excreted, but I also know that some stays behind in our body, which is shown by the build up in bones, enamel, and in our pineal glands.

Considering that we consume that much each year, who knows how much we will have in our body in 40 years. This might be why so many people have thyroid disorders, and it could be a major cause of cancer, but who knows.

I am going to try and find out more about how Fluoride is excreted from the body, and what determines how much Fluoride stays behind to accumulate.

    Will let ya know,

    -Abe

You should just do an actual study on it.  See if you can get the University to fund it.  I'm sure it would look good for residency selection…

I wish dude, there is just noooo time.

The one study I was trying to put together was to figure out whether or not Psytrance really does promote Alpha waves in the brain using blind-folded listeners and an electroencephalogram. I am still obtaining more information from researchers from other studies involving music, medicine, and EEG machines, to try and develop the study. It is hard to find time though, and i haven't put much time into it this year. That is the first study I want to do if i ever get a chance to do research, is to see if Psytrance really does put the cerebral cortex into a state of “wakeful sleep” aka Trance.

but i found this about Fluoride excretion:

This study suggests that approximately 30% of Fluoride we ingest is excreted, while approximately 60% is maintained:

a medical student sent this out today because some of the only people to reply to my Fluoride email were those that wanted to bash me and not have an intelligent discussion on the topic. of the 3 students that replied initially, 2 of them replied to the public listserv so other students could read their reply as they bashed me and rejected my concern and told me i was being “illogical”. even though I had presented quite a bit of scientific evidence suggesting that my concern was a valid one. Even if Fluoride is not causing health problems, the fact that my evidence-based concern was met with disrespect and ridicule from 2 of the 3 students that replied, and the fact that they were bashing me in public, just goes to show how some people can't control their emotions and be logical and rational in regards to senesitive topics. the other 1 of the 3 replied to me in private, because he had already done lots of research on the Fluoride topic and stated that there is an overwhelming scientific case against Fluoride and that he has already purched a water filter to remove it from his water. He sent his supportive reply to me in private because he feared being ridiculed by other students.

Today, a different student that had observed the drama, sent this out. I thought I should share it:

“I'm sure we're all tired of receiving these emails, but I just wanted to chime in on the idea of conspiracy theories and “politeness”.

I was on wikipedia looking at the article for the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor society today, and as I was making a casual glance across the notable members section, I saw a doctor with an interesting title: “Steven Greer, physician and UFO-logist”. What followed was me reading about a fascinating man who was formerly the department head of Emergency Medicine for a hospital in North Carolina; a position he later left to pursue his interests in UFO's. He claimed to have been personally contacted by extraterrestrials, and he has founded numerous projects to investigate various things that we commonly clump together as “conspiracy theories”. He has also used some of his passion to support projects for alternative energy. Here is a link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steven_M._Greer

I was instantly reminded of this whole “fluoride debate”–especially an earlier email about “awaiting the revolution”. When it comes to conspiracy theories, I have always been skeptical to the point of never believing. Although Abe has presented many points to defend his position, I cannot say I agree with almost any of it. Does this, however, mean I go so far as to mock a fellow colleague simply because he subscribes to notions I disagree with? No, of course not. Whatever be my disagreement, it is important I be civil. I should especially avoid berating a colleague in front of my peers, since it would speak of a deeper problem of disrespect. One thing I'm sure many of us have noted, is that Abe has always maintained a level of politeness in all his emails. Even after being berated, he has maintained the courteous language. I have had debates with Abe before about other theories, and he is someone I have come to respect tremendously simply out of how passionate he feels over his beliefs. We often disagree, but I have never had a doubt that he genuinely cares enough about doing what's good for everyone.

You could argue, “a doctor holding certain notions can be a danger to themselves or their patients.” However, if a doctor does their job, and does not falsely represent information as being “currently medically accepted fact”, can any one of us really criticize him or her? We all have our opinions that induce biases in any actions we take. I for one hate Apple, and will tell any patient who asks my opinion on laptops that they should buy a PC. Dr. Steven Greer, when asked about UFO's will state that aliens have arrived. However, if an individual does their job and maintains that offering accepted fact and opinions are separate, should we attack someone's professional qualifications? Dr. Greer certainly proved that being a physician graduating AOA and a conspiracy theorist are not mutually exclusive phenomenon. I think his claims of UFO's are irrational, but I admire his projects on finding sources of alternative energy. Let him speak his mind and do what he wants so long as he isn't putting on an alien costume and driving UFO shaped cars into people's homes.

We should also not forget that only 60 years ago, sticking a thin metal rod into a persons frontal cortex and swirling it around was an accepted medical procedure to cure “paranoia”. Dissenting opinions eventually gathered enough evidence to stop the disgusting act. It goes without saying then that stifling critical opinions of currently accepted science with arrogance and disrespect of our peers is unreasonable.

Ultimately, the first amendment is about freedom of speech, not freedom to be a douche.

    –Jesse”
