i did my undergraduate senior thesis on negative index of refraction metamaterials  ;D
i zapped one such material with ultrafast laser pulses and looked at the phase shift of the transmitted pulse.

calling this the first man-made black hole is scientific sensationalism indeed.  pretty silly.  and it wasn't foxnews' fault…the paper itself put a huge emphasis on it. interesting none the less.  it'll be exciting to see if they can get this to work for optical wavelengths.
